Mar 16, 2024 803
Addis Ababa, March 16/2024 (ENA) Ethiopia and Malta have established strong relationships in key areas over the past few years, Malta Ambassador Ronald Micallef told Ethiopian News Agency. In an exclusive interview with the agency, the ambassador said that the countries have established ties in key areas. The key areas, according to Ambassador Micallef, are cyber diplomacy, IT, and digital as well as tourism, logistics and international connectivity. Moreover, memoranda have been signed in aviation, tourism, and diplomatic training; and they are going very well, he added. Most importantly we have hosted Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and our foreign minister has been visiting Ethiopia regularly, the ambassador, noted adding that we have now gone to the next step. According to Ambassador Micallef, sixteen Maltese companies are currently exploring business opportunities and establishing business relations. Recall that the 1st Ethiopia-Malta Business Forum was held in Addis Ababa during the concluded week with the objective of enhancing business relation between the two countries. “I think trade is the most important form of cooperation. So, I'm hoping that this visit will provide momentum to create trade in areas where Malta and Ethiopia cannot only sell to each other, but more importantly, create new content, create new industries, especially in the digital and educational areas.” This trade mission is vital in terms of creating trade, but also a statement of confidence in Ethiopia. “We see this (Ethiopia) as a growing country. We believe we can work together.” He further stated that Malta is implementing multi-strategy for Africa through the embassy in Addis Ababa. Asked about Ethiopia's effort to reduce the impact of climate change, Ambassador Micallef said that “first of all I need to applaud Ethiopia because Ethiopia sets a standard with the planting of trees. The planting of trees has been done on a massive and very impressive scale. And I think that's something my country can learn a lot from.” But Malta is a country of the sea. So, for us rising sea levels are an issue and we are advocating for greater recognition of rising sea for small island states, which will see that tourism and the industries eroded, he elaborated. “In the international, multilateral side, climate change is one of those really important topics, whether it's the rising of the sea, or the reforestation of land. In this regard, Malta and Ethiopia have a lot that they can do together.” The two and a half years existence of the Maltese Embassy in Ethiopia has been very productive. he underscored. “As a small embassy we are quite active, but the most important result is seeing businesses talk to each other, create new content, create new industries, create jobs for people. Therefore, this at the end of the day is what diplomacy is about.” The diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Malta dates back to the 1970s; and Malta opened its embassy in Addis Ababa in 2021.

Ethiopia, Norway Sign 75-million-USD Agreement
Feb 27, 2024 2966
Addis Ababa February 27/2024(ENA) Ethiopia and Norway have signed a 75-million-USD agreement to reduce green gas emission from deforestation and forest degradation. The agreement was signed between Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and Norway Climate and Environment Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen today. Speaking on the occasion, the finance minister said the agreement will enable Ethiopia to continue strengthening the work it is doing in forestry development and environmental protection. Fighting climate change and poverty reduction as well as building climate resilient economy disaster economy remain among the top priorities of the Ethiopia government, he added. According to him, the nationwide tree planting campaign under the Green Legacy Initiative by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is another manifestation of his commitment to addressing climate change. Ethiopia has invested over 82 billion USD in climate change mitigation and adaptation programs and the majority of the finance office projects and programs come from public finance supplemented with international development aid, Ahmed Shide stated. “The partnership agreement we signed today is yet another testimony of our successful collaboration and achievement during the past decade marks a new era of collaboration and partnership, including through resulted-based payment approach in the run to 2030." Ethiopia and Norway have enjoyed longstanding bilateral diplomatic relations, the minister explained, adding that their common interests include peace and security, migrate climate change, private sector development, gender equality among others. Norway Climate and Environment Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said the Green Legacy initiated by the government is ambitious plan to reduce adverse effect of climate change. The country has been a long standing partner of Ethiopia on climate and forest, he stated. "We were one of the first countries to fully commit our long term support for Ethiopia’s climate resilient green economy strategy when launched in Durban in 2011." And throughout this decade, Ethiopia has truly been a leader on the African continent when it comes to designing and implementing green economic development policies. Ethiopia is in many ways at the very front line of climate change, Climate and Environment Minister Eriksen noted. "I am encouraged to learn that Ethiopia has increased its forest cover due to strong government policy measures that yield the necessary results; and the ambitious target of doubling the forest cover by 2030 is very much impressive. And Norway is proud to have supported this achievement." The climate and environment minister added that Norway intends to support Ethiopia during this next phase of partnership, one which includes the continuation of the REDD+ investment program last year.
Ethiopia Plays Leading Role in Africa in Terms of Climate Action: GGGI
Feb 27, 2024 2610
Addis Ababa February 27/2024(ENA) Ethiopia's tree planting initiative and the government's resolve to combat climate change is what the world exactly needs to avert current global challenges, a senior official at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) underscored. Recalled that Ethiopians have embarked on an ambitious campaign of planting billions of trees every year in an effort to achieve a greener and cleaner environment and tackle the adverse effects of climate crisis. So far the country has planted more than 32.5 billion trees through the Green Legacy Initiative launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019. Deputy Director General and Head of Green Growth Planning and Implementation at GGGI Helena McLeod commended the efforts of the government to reduce impact of climate change and expressed keenness to work with Ethiopia. In an exclusive interview with ENA, Helena McLeod said that Ethiopia plays a leading role in Africa in terms of climate action and that is a role the country has been meeting for many years, and we're very happy to support the government on that. McLeod, who visited Ethiopia recently, also said that Ethiopia is one of the most beautiful countries she had visited in the world. Noting that the country has been suffering from climate change, she said the tree planting program is very significant in tackling these challenges as it creates jobs and increase the fertility of the soil. Moreover, she stated that the efforts being carried out in Ethiopia will also protect cities in the proper way from flooding. "Planting trees has many different advantages, including potentially biodiversity as well. So the tree planting program and the government's ambition is exactly what the world needs and it is leading in that sense," she said. According to the deputy director, Ethiopia, as a country before and now is not emitting very much carbon. There are other countries in the world that are emitting much larger amounts of carbon and have made commitments to reduce the amount of carbon emissions. "What we trying to do in GGGI is attract climate finance to our member countries," McLeod said, adding that often our member countries don't have enough money to tackle the major challenges that are facing the economy, but also they don't have enough capacity to take advantage of the opportunities. On green bonds for instance in 2021, the organization supported Peru to issue the largest sustainable green bonds in the world at that point in history. That was for over 4 billion US dollars. Since then GGGI is working with over 20 different countries on different types of bond, sustainability bonds and green bonds. “We're going to use that experience and bring it to Ethiopia to see whether that's a mechanism where we can bring in more investment to tackle climate change, and other issues like jobs, green jobs, that can also benefit the economy.” In terms of carbon trading, this is a really high potential area to bring in some additional funding into the country and GGGI works with Ethiopia to make sure that the trade is fair for the country and its interests. “I just want to say that Ethiopia is such an important country, it's a continent leader. It has a very strong global voice. Your government is very committed with very ambitious targets, including on restoration of land, increasing yield, increasing food security and exporting crops as well. We love working with the government and we will work hand in hand with the government and the people of Ethiopia on this green growth transition.” GGGI, an international organization focused on promoting sustainable economic growth in developing countries, has been working closely with Ethiopia since it became a founding member in 2012.
IGAD Climate Centre Predicts Higher Probability of Wetter Than Normal Conditions in Horn Region
Feb 21, 2024 3172
Addis Ababa February 21/2024 The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) has predicted that there will be a higher probability of wetter-than-normal conditions in the upcoming March to May 2024, across most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa. In its press release sent to ENA, ICPAC said that notably, the areas expected to experience these wetter conditions include Kenya, Somalia, southern Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and north-western Tanzania. The highest probabilities for wetter than usual conditions are indicated in central to western Kenya and in the cross-border areas of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. The expected enhanced rainfall is likely to positively impact agriculture, water resources, and overall livelihoods, according to the center. The press release also added that an early to normal rainfall onset is expected in several parts of the region. These include parts of northern Tanzania, eastern Rwanda, Southern and Western Uganda, Western Kenya, South-western Somalia, and parts of South-central Ethiopia. " Due to the increased rainfall recorded in the October to December 2023 period, along with the forecast of wetter-than-normal conditions from March to May, there is an elevated risk of flooding in areas prone to floods,” the ICPAC director Dr. Guleid Artan noted. The director added the forecast underscores the urgency for coordinated action and preparedness, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate potential impacts and capitalize on the opportunities presented by the forecast rainfall. He also stressed the need for uniting in our commitment to leveraging climate information for resilient and sustainable development across our region. Artan further added that, “while the food security situation may improve with wetter than usual conditions, it is important to remember the multiple challenges faced by the region, including the historic 2020-2022 drought, conflict in various parts of the region such as Sudan, and the El Nino-induced floods at the end of 2023. This has weakened communities’ coping capacity, making them highly susceptible to food insecurity. The likelihood of flooding during the 2024 MAM season in parts of the region could lead to a deterioration in food security in localized areas.” The objective temperature forecast indicates an increased likelihood of warmer than normal surface temperatures over the entire region. Probabilities for warmer than normal temperatures are most enhanced over Sudan, northern South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia and southern parts of Tanzania. In line with the World Meteorological Organization's guidelines and recommendations, ICPAC has adopted an objective seasonal forecast method to generate climate forecasts for the Greater Horn of Africa. February 2024 initialized seasonal forecasts from nine Global Producing Centres (GPCs) were utilized and processed using three calibration techniques to develop the MAM 2024 seasonal climate outlook.

The Battle of Adwa: A Shining Path to Pan Africanism
Mar 1, 2024 2173
BY SOLOMON DIBABA The Victory of Adwa is a hard won battle in 1896 during the reign of Emperor Menelik II. Following the declaration pronounced by the emperor that the sovereignty of Ethiopia was endangered by Italian Aggression, Ethiopians from four corners of the country marched to Addis Ababa and Were Ilu. Peasants, women and volunteers, artisans and others from all backgrounds and ethnicities left for Addis Ababa and Were Ilu to fend off Italian aggressors who had the support of the colonial powers in the Scramble for Africa. The victory of Adwa is commemorated annually on March 2 in Ethiopia. Exactly 128 years ago, more than 100,000, multi-ethnic, barefooted and well equipped but courageous Ethiopian irregular soldiers led by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taitu and 12 commanders drawn from across the country marched for a historic face off with invading Italian Army equipped to the teeth with modern firearms at the hills of Adwa. The victory of Ethiopian youth army at the Battle of Adwa on March 2, 1896 is a historic landmark in the history of the black population across the world, particularly in Africa. It ignited two important phenomenological incidents in Ethiopian and African history including the decolonization of African and the continental vision of Pan Africanism. The victory at the Battle of Adwa immediately resonated across the world in complete negation of the invincibility of the diplomatic, political and military prowess of the European colonialists and their cry wolf of “civilizing mission.” Every year on March 2, Ethiopia and Africa mark the victory at the Battle of Adwa, in which Emperor Menelik II mobilized youth army of artesian, women and volunteers from all walks of life to repel Italian aggressors which received the blessings of the colonial powers in the Scramble for Africa in line with the resolutions of the Berlin Conference (1884-1885.) Professor Richard Pankhurst, in his book "Reflections on the Battle of Adwa," highlights the enduring significance of the Ethiopian triumph at the Battle of Adwa, which holds a prominent place in the collective memory of the African continent. This historic event stands as a remarkable testament, celebrated for over a century, and holds the unique distinction of being the sole secular occurrence in Africa's extensive chronicles to garner such prolonged recognition. A phenomenon such as Adwa is a complex nexus of various historical processes with wide ranging but as yet not fully explored meanings. Adwa does not only reflect its time, but that it also transcends it, and that the aspirations and meanings that flow from it have been a powerful constitutive force in the rise and evolution of modern African Pan Africanism. Indeed, it is an event that awakened the hope for emancipation and the struggle against colonialism and racism among Africans in the colonies and in the Diaspora. Black people across the globe celebrate one historical asset that occurred 128 years ago in a small town in northern Ethiopia. The Battle of Adwa was a rocket booster or a launching pad for the inception of Pan Africanism. This historic battle and the subsequent victory registered by irregular army of Ethiopia resonated across the world as the first victory against a colonial power ever to be won by an African country. History proves that the victory at the Battle of Adwa was not a victory only for Ethiopia. Although the Battle was fought in Ethiopia, the entire global peoples share this outstanding victory against a European colonial power that was thought to be invincible. It must be noted that the founding fathers of the former OAU were certainly inspired by the loft goals of pan Africanism. Kwame Nkrumah, who was undoubtedly one of Africa’s foremost freedom fighters, nationalists, writers, and thinkers, that influenced a generation of Pan-African nationalists and freedom fighters, and the founding member of the Organization of African. He foretold that “It is clear that we must find an African solution to our problems, and that this can only be found in African unity. Divided We fall; United, We Stand" become one of the greatest forces for good in the world. Will Africa live up to these expectations? The current trend is in the right direction but certainly there are huge challenges ahead before the lofty goals of Pan Africanism are achieved. Today, the African Union (AU) has creatively designed Agenda 2063. Ethiopia was and is indeed a forerunner in promoting the loft goals of Pan Africanism and the decolonization of the African continent by supporting major African liberation fronts like ANC. Moreover, in the sphere of integrating Africa, Ethiopia has already gone a long way in connecting Africa by aviation, railway line, road transport, telecommunication and supply of renewable hydro-electric power for the neighboring countries. The aspirations of the victory at the Battle of Adwa needs to be implanted in the African youth who are expected to continue to light up the torch of Pan Africanism. The spirit of Adwa will certainly continue to reverberate in the current pan Africanist battle against abject poverty, climate change and pursue common destiny. In this regard, Ethiopia has recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art memorial to honor those who fell at the Battle of Adwa. The Adwa Victory Memorial honors the bravery and resilience of Ethiopians in the face of colonial powers who labeled the continent Africa as dark. In addition to its historical significance, the Victory Memorial also serves as a symbol of pride, unity, and resilience for the Ethiopian people and Africa at large. It is a place of remembrance, reflection, and education, preserving the memory of the Battle of Adwa and its enduring legacy for future generations. Victory at the Battle of Adwa is indeed symbolic of how an irregular army of Ethiopia defeated an European army equipped to the teeth only because Ethiopians were united in purpose to ensure their freedom and territorial integrity. The lesson from Adwa was loud and clear, united Africans can overcome any challenge facing them.
Adwa Victory Memorial Beyond A Monument
Feb 11, 2024 5407
The inauguration of Adwa Victory Memorial is more than revealing a monument and indeed is celebrating a legacy that goes beyond the bounds of time and place for all black people across the world. United Ethiopians forces in the Battle of Adwa 127 years ago made a landmark history by triumphing over Italian colonial powers. The Adwa Victory Memorial, built at the heart of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, which will be inaugurated today in the presence of high ranking government officials and invited guests, depicts this grand event and its significances. The Adwa Victory Memorial provides major historical events, pertinent individuals like Emperor Menelik II, Empress Taytu Betul, and generals who spearheaded Ethiopia's victory in the battle. It depicts significant historical issues like the spirit of pan-Africanism and the global black community's fight for freedom, which were sparked following Adwa's victory. This memorial is a vivid representation of a defining moment in history, embodying the enduring spirit and resilience of Ethiopia, Africa, and all who have faced oppression across the globe. It is crystal clear that Adwa is not merely an Ethiopian treasure; it is a jewel in the crown of African heritage and a beacon of hope for all oppressed peoples worldwide. This is due to the fact that Ethiopians did not just defeat a colonial power in 1896 rather they wrote a new chapter in history, fundamentally altering global perceptions about Africans. Besides, the victory shattered the then prevailing perception narrative against Africans as inferior and showcased instead a continent rich in strategy, bravery, and the unwavering pursuit of freedom. Along the years the echoes of Adwa Victory have resonated through generations, inspiring countless Africans to envisage a future unshackled from the chains of colonialism. Furthermore, it has been a source of pride and a rallying cry for change, igniting the flames of independence movements across the continent. Adwa through the memorial inaugurated today still stands as a living testament to the indomitable spirit of Africa, a reminder that unity and courage can overturn the tides of oppression. By building the Adwa Victory Memorial, Ethiopians are not only preserving a historical legacy but also reigniting a spirit of change and empowerment. It is a call to remember the past struggles and victories, to draw strength from them, and to continue the fight for a world where every person, regardless of race or origin, can live with dignity and opportunity. To put it in nut shell, the Adwa Victory Memorial is therefore, more than just a structure of stone and metal; it is a symbol of hope, a shrine of courage, and a school of inspiration for generations to come.
