Digital Sovereignty Eliminates Technological Dependency to Drive Self-Reliant New Ethiopia: Prime Minister Abiy

(September 10, 2026, Addis Ababa) —Ethiopia’s strategic leap from paper to digital systems and from passive consumption to active innovation has placed the nation on a monumental trajectory toward a self-reliant digital economy, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced today.

PM Abiy made the statements in a message shared on his official X page on September 10 or Pagume 5 on Ethiopian Calendar, observed nationally as "The Day of the Future," marking the final day of the bridge period preceding the Ethiopian New Year.

Highlighting how technology has been embedded across sectors, he emphasized the cultural evolution taking place nationwide.

"From paper to digital, from passive consumption to active innovation!" Abiy said. "By learning from the past and relentlessly building the present, digital transformation is becoming our living daily culture streamlining commerce, enhancing accessibility, and modernizing public services."

The Prime Minister pointed to human capital building as a core driver of the nation’s technological advancement and youth empowerment.

"As the 5 million Ethio-coders initiative empowers our youth as AI creators toward a 7 million target, our expanding digital service infrastructure guarantees quality and seamless access for all," he stated.

Underscoring the achievement of complete strategic independence in technology, Abiy affirmed that national capacity now protects the country's economic future.

"Backed by homegrown capacity, our Digital sovereignty eliminates technological dependency proudly signalling a self-reliant, digitally driven new Ethiopia," he said.
