Consensus on Major Nat'l Issues Only Solution for Ethiopia's Sustainable Peace, Dev’t: Peace Minster
May 1, 2024 2429
Addis Ababa, May 1/2024 (ENA) Peace Minister Binalf Andualem said reaching consensus on major national issues is the only solution for the Ethiopia's sustainable peace and development. The minister made the remark at a training given to members of House of People's Representatives and Regional councils on nation building.   Although a national consensus is critical for sustainable peace, the ways we followed to create national consensus did not follow the right direction, he noted, adding that this prevented the country from creating the national consensus desired. According to him, it was not possible to create a lasting peace and national harmony in Ethiopia because of the political deadlock in the past. The root of Ethiopia's political and social breakdowns is focusing only on the previous bad or good stories, Binalf elaborated. Even if Ethiopia has a long history of government formation and an early civilization, the main secret of countries that are better than Ethiopia in terms of universal development is that they have learned from their past and made their future better. "While Ethiopia boasts a rich history and ancient civilization, the ability to draw lessons from history and apply them to contemporary challenges is essential for progress and development." This is what countries that have rapidly advanced in terms of universal development have often done by leveraging their historical experiences, both positive and negative, to inform their policies and strategies, the minister pointed out. He stressed that there should be continuous dialogue and mutual understanding among the entire society of the country in order to ensure lasting peace and development in Ethiopia. Exerting maximum effort to ensure consensus on key issues pertaining to national identity, national interest, and national values is crucial, according to Binalf. This emphasis underscores the importance of uniting the populace around shared values and aspirations, which are essential for fostering social cohesion and driving collective progress. The minister believes that Ethiopia can strengthen its foundation for sustainable development and prosperity by prioritizing consensus-building on these fundamental pillars of nationhood. In this regard, legislative bodies play a crucial role in nation-building, primarily through the enactment of laws and policies that shape the social, economic, and political landscape of a nation. Binalf underscored that the development and growth of a country are guaranteed through continuous progress, driven by leadership at all levels and the cooperation of the people. Environmental Programs Positively Impacting on Sustainability of Nile Basin: NBI
Apr 29, 2024 2387
Addis Ababa, April 29/2024 (ENA) The national environmental programs of the Nile riparian countries have been greatly contributing to the sustainability of the basin, Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) Secretariat told ENA. Executive Director of NBI, Florence Grace Adongo underlined that as the environmental sustainability is one of the key pillars, NBI has continued to push those riparian countries to reinforce the program at the national level. “What we are doing is encouraging countries at the national level of their environmental re-afforestation and restoration program,” executive director revealed. In this regard, Adongo lauded Ethiopia for its commendable strides in executing various environmental programs including the Green Legacy Initiative. “Ethiopia has done very well and we appreciate that,” she said. Similarly, other countries for example Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, among others have got annual targets as well, she added. Thus, she praised the efforts of countries at the national level, which are hugely impacting the sustainability of the Nile Basin, adding that for which we would want to appreciate nations for their contribution. Alongside the environmental programs, the executive director stated that the Nile Basin Initiative secretariat is demanding resource mobilization to implement extra projects for the basin. As the secretariat continues to reiterate its commitment, we are also looking into resource mobilization and having projects going forward, Adongo further revealed. Mentioning key pillars to manage and sustainably develop the common Nile Basin, the executive director indicated that some of them do not attract resources quite easily like others. “We are adapting an integrated approach. If we are working in one basin for example developing hydro-power, we should also look at the catchment. If the catchment of that basin is not maintained then the infrastructure that we have built will not be sustainable.” Regarding the role of NBI in over 25 years engagement, Adongo said it served as the platform for dialogue, a catalyst for change, fostering regional integration, enhancing competitiveness and unlocking the Nile Basin's immense potential for Africa and beyond. NBI covers 10 percent of the African continent and is home to almost a quarter of the continent's population. In spite of its immense potential for massive development, Nile Basin countries face key development challenges which are related to water security, energy security, food security and vulnerability to the environmental shocks that are rising from the negative impacts of climate change. Acknowledging the aforementioned challenges, Adongo revealed that no county can manage these unilaterally. Therefore, she stressed that countries across the Nile Basin should come together to find a common solution for such common problems. Nile Basin Initiative is a regional intergovernmental partnership launched by the Nile Basin countries on 22nd February, 1999 to manage and develop the shared Nile Basin water resources in a cooperative manner, share substantial socio-economic benefits and promote regional peace and security.

Ethiopia's Green Legacy Example for Africa: UK Climate Directorate Head
Apr 24, 2024 3824
Addis Ababa, April 24/2024 (ENA) Ethiopia's Green Legacy tree-planting program is a leading example for Africa, UK Climate and Nature Africa Directorate Head said. UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Climate and Nature Africa Directorate Head, Julian P. Wright, told ENA that Ethiopia has shown progress in its seedlings planting programs since international climate conferences in Durban and Dubai.   “Ethiopia has progressed since the Durban COP in terms of planting, and a number of examples stand out. The tree planting (Green Legacy), is really good, really important in a country where forestry is a key part of the economy.” According to him, the UK has a long-standing partnership with Ethiopia on climate change initiatives and hopes that the country can successfully deliver on its ambitious commitments. The UK is a strong advocate for locally-led adaptation strategies and social protection programs to build resilience at community level, the head stated. "In Ethiopia we are big supporters of social protection; the SNP programme for example as a way of improving resilience to climate change on the ground, and locally led adaptation is key." The head said the UK has played a key role in establishing the new loss and damage fund at COP 28, aimed at assisting developing countries facing the brunt of climate change impacts. Continued collaboration between Ethiopia and its partners like the UK will be crucial in ensuring a sustainable future for the African continent, Wright noted, and promised to continue the partnership in the field between the countries. Planning and Development State Minister, Seyoum Mekonnen on his part expressed Ethiopia's desire to expand the Green Legacy program and become a renewable energy exporter in Africa. He revealed that sharing seedlings and exporting renewable energy to neighboring countries are already underway. “We are striving to connect countries in Africa through the Green Legacy program and energy transition,” the state minister added. Building a climate-resilient economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are central pillars of Ethiopia's 10-year development plan, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions and a climate-resilient economy by 2050.

Ethiopian Diaspora Demand Egypt to Change Counterproductive Posture on GERD
Apr 4, 2023 50902
Addis Ababa April 4/2023 (ENA) Ethiopians in the Diaspora have called on Egypt to change its counterproductive posture and find mutually beneficial agreements on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In a statement the diaspora issued yesterday, they noted that Ethiopia is the main source of the Nile by contributing 86 percent of the water to the Nile basin states while utilizing less than 1 percent of the potential for hydroelectric power. Ethiopians are currently building the GERD on the Blue Nile that is financed entirely by Ethiopians and is a crucial project for the country's development as it will provide clean, renewable energy and lift millions out of poverty. About 65 percent of the 122 million of Ethiopia's population have no access to any form of electricity. The much-needed electricity will facilitate economic growth for Ethiopia and the region, the statement elaborated. The dam will promote regional cooperation and integration while offering opportunity for eleven countries of the Nile Basin to work together to manage the river's resources more efficiently and effectively, it added. The GERD is being built with the highest environmental and technical standards to achieve the objectives of the national electrification program and the execution of Ethiopia’s Climate-Resilient Green Economy Strategy. According to the statement, Ethiopia has provided scientific evidence and expert testimonies that GERD will not significantly affect the flow of water downstream, and provided compelling arguments for the need for equitable use of the Nile's resources by all countries in the region. The diaspora further said they understand that the GERD has raised concerns in Egypt about the downstream effects on the Nile's flow and water availability since Egyptians have been misinformed about the GERD for many years. But on the contrary, the dam will provide several benefits to Egypt and Sudan, including increased water flow during dry seasons and decreased flooding events. “We want to assure Egyptians that Ethiopians are committed to fair and equitable use of the Nile's waters without harming our downstream neighbors. We recognize that the Nile River is a shared resource, and we support finding a mutually beneficial solution.” As Ethiopians in the Diaspora, we reiterate our support for fair and equitable use of the Nile River and call on the Egyptian people and Egyptian Diaspora to question the misinformation about the GERD in Egypt's mainstream media and embrace the spirit of friendship and cooperation by understanding that the GERD is a project of great national importance to Ethiopians that will benefit Egyptians by ensuring a reliable and predictable supply of water, that Ethiopians have the right to use their water resources for the development of its people and economy, in accordance with the principles of equitable and reasonable utilization without causing significant harm. Efforts to destabilize Ethiopia by the regime in Egypt, will indeed affect the historical and diplomatic relations dating back to several thousand years, the long-term interest of the Egyptian people and make Ethiopians less trusting in cooperating on the GERD and future hydropower projects on the Nile, they warned. The diaspora groups urged Egyptian leaders to engage in constructive dialogue with the leaders of Ethiopia regarding the GERD and steer away from their counterproductive posture of calling for a “binding agreement” on the GERD filling and the subsequent operations as an imposing instrument on water sharing that Ethiopians will never accept. The GERD can be a source of cooperation and collaboration between our two countries rather than a source of conflict, they underscored. "Ethiopians believe that, through dialogue and understanding, peaceful and equitable agreements that benefit all parties involved can be realized to build a brighter future for all people in the Nile basin. Belligerent positions by Egyptian leaders stating ‘all options are open’ are contrary to the spirit of the 2015 Declaration of Principles signed by Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt." According to the statement, such postures will surely harm Egypt's long-term interest and impede trustful cooperation with the Ethiopian people and government. They asked Arab League and its member states to refrain from interfering in the issue of the GERD, which is the sole concern of the three riparian countries (Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt) and their shared regional organization (the African Union), which is mediating the talks to find ‘African Solutions to African Problems.’ The issues remaining on the table at the trilateral negotiations under the auspices of the African Union are being narrowed to a handful of critical matters on equity and justice, on which the Arab league nations have no business or legal right to be involved.
Africa’s Sustainable Growth Hinges on Science, Technology and Innovation: Experts
Mar 3, 2023 46377
Addis Ababa March 3/2023/ENA/ Achieving the ambitious targets of the 2030 and 2063 Agendas of Africa requires leveraging the power of science, technology, and innovation (STI), according to experts. A press release issued by the ECA stated experts at the Ninth African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development have emphasized the crucial role of STI as a key driver and enabler for ensuring economic growth, improving well-being, mitigating the effects of climate change, and safeguarding the environment. They also underscored the need to strengthen national and regional STI ecosystems by fostering innovation, promoting entrepreneurship, and investing in research and development. By doing so, the experts said that Africa can harness the potential of STI to accelerate its socio-economic progress and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and the African Union's Agenda by 2063. The session, held on 2 March 2023, builds on the recommendations of the Fifth African Science, Technology, and Innovation Forum, which accentuates the central role of STI and digitalization during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for the necessary infrastructures for the development of STI, plans, and policies that are action-oriented towards strengthening its full implantation. The experts highlighted that despite advances in STI, significant gaps remain in bridging the scientific and technological divide between developed countries and Africa. The highly uneven global distribution of scientific capacity and access to knowledge threatens to derail the goal of leaving no one behind, which is the central and transformative promise of Agenda 2030. “We need a clear political will from governments to ensure science, technology, and innovation is a reality. By doing so our education systems will be capacitated to deliver knowledge that is vital to solving Africa’s sustainability challenges,” Niger Higher Education and Research Minister Mamoudou Djibo said. The strategy includes the establishment of universities as centers for excellence and investments in education, technical competencies, and training in the fields of science, technology, research, and innovation. These initiatives are crucial in accelerating progress towards achieving global goals. However, in order to fully leverage the potential of STI, significant investments in research and development are required. National systems also need to be strengthened, Namibia Information and Communication Technologies Deputy Minister Emma Theophilus, stated adding that “strengthening our national systems for STI is a key game changer for rapid structural transformation in Africa. Leveraging the digital transformation can achieve a stronger, smarter, and more inclusive recovery.” Emerging evidence suggests that an STI and digital Africa can be a springboard to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs and fulfill the aspirations of Agenda 2063.

The establishment of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission represents a beacon of hope, aiming to promote inclusive dialogue, mediation, and national unity. The values embodied by the sacred Fasika celebration offer a powerful guiding force for the work of this Commission. Just as families and communities come together during Fasika to heal rifts and strengthen bonds, so too can the diverse groups of Ethiopia engage in open and honest dialogue, guided by the principles of forgiveness, empathy, and a shared commitment to the nation's well-being. The joyous sounds of Fasika celebrations echo across the country, serving as a resounding reminder of the resilience, faith, and unwavering spirit that has sustained the Ethiopian people through centuries of triumphs and challenges. It is a time when the nation comes together, not just to commemorate a pivotal moment in Christian history but also to reaffirm the enduring values of forgiveness, unity, and collective progress – virtues that lie at the heart of Fasika and can guide Ethiopia towards a more harmonious future. By embracing the essence of Ethiopian Easter (Fasika) and leveraging its rich cultural heritage, Ethiopia can forge a path towards genuine national reconciliation, where diverse groups engage in constructive dialogue, address historical grievances, and work together towards a shared vision of peace, prosperity, and unity in diversity. The dialogue that involves all segments of the society with a view to resolving centuries old predicaments that the country is facing, heal resentments and wounds caused during the heinous acts of previous political systems. As part of the city's continued development activities, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently announced another significant project. He has launched a campaign to revolutionize public sanitation infrastructure, envisioning modern, hygienic, and inclusive restroom facilities across urban areas. The campaign, named "Clean Streets and Healthy Livelihood," places community engagement at its core and aligns with a broader commitment to creating cities that cater to the needs of all citizens. Prime Minister Abiy has called upon Ethiopians to join hands in building cities that prioritize cleanliness and inclusivity, emphasizing the importance of collective effort. This campaign builds upon the Prime Minister's transformative endeavors during his six-year tenure, which have focused on improving urban environments and public amenities. The campaign dubbed “clean streets and healthy livelihood,” is closely linked to the beautification of Addis Ababa, the greening of the city, the road corridor development project, and the ongoing rehabilitation of infrastructure. “As we embark on this new initiative, I call upon all Ethiopians to contribute their share in creating cities that are conducive for everyone,” he posted on X. The campaign which could be launched in regional cities as well is closely connected to the beautification of Addis Ababa and greening the city along with road corridor development project and rehabilitation of infrastructures currently underway in the city. For many decades, Addis Ababa has lacked standardized public restrooms and sanitary services, often leading residents to resort to unsanitary alternatives in isolated corners. The project aims to provide the public with standardized restrooms and sanitation facilities and is financed through donations from the general public, individual donors, and institutions and companies that have enthusiastically embraced the Prime Minister's initiative. The project is expected to provide residents with access to public sanitation services in a more dignified manner, reducing the spread of waterborne diseases and related health hazards. Over time, it may also create employment opportunities for those in need and serve as a source of income generation for the unemployed. This project is also an integral part of the green legacy initiative, which contributes to various ecotourism projects and park developments that are already modernizing Addis Ababa's landscape. To ensure the sustainability of the project and create a vibrant and healthy environment for the public to enjoy the benefits of improved sanitation, it is essential to emphasize the importance of public participation and organized development. As efforts to secure funds for the project, a telethon has been launched last week by the premier. The fundraising activity can serve as a showcase for the significance of cooperation and mutual concern in improving the health and beautification of cities across the country. The general public and individual companies have been actively participating in the telethon.
