This is one of the experiences that Ethiopia proudly shares with African brothers and sisters as a model, the executive director emphasized. Accordingly, IFA is also serving as a bridge between diplomacy and peace building, providing training for diplomats, policymakers, regional actors with the necessary knowledge and skills.   Lulia Pataki, Ambassador of Romania to Ethiopia, on her part, said that the program is the cornerstone of the country’s strategy for Africa. For the Ambassador, the course is very important in reconstruction and stabilization endeavors, noting that one of the important subjects of this course is disinformation, which affects peace and development, and how to deal with it. It is an opportunity to connect, to learn from each other, to share experience, expertise and knowledge on how to prevent instability in countries and rebuild our societies, she elaborated. Former U.S. Diplomat Urges Egypt to Prioritize Technical Dialogue with Ethiopia Over Political Drama
Oct 19, 2025 2820
Addis Ababa, October 19, 2025 (ENA) -- Ambassador Tibor Nagy, a seasoned American diplomat and former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, has urged Egypt to abandon its political posturing and instead engage Ethiopia constructively on technical matters related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In a strongly worded public statement posted on his X page, Nagy criticized Egypt’s approach to the dam, warning that attempts to pressure or isolate Ethiopia are counterproductive. “I know from experience that Ethiopia cannot be bullied, and the more you push, the more immovable they become,” said Nagy, adding, “It’s time to accept today’s reality.” Nagy, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia and later as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, emphasized the need for professional engagement rather than politicized rhetoric. “My advice to Egypt. Drop the political drama and engage with Ethiopia professionally on technical issues. I know from experience that Ethiopia cannot be bullied, and the more you push, the more immovable they become. It’s time to accept today’s reality,” Nagy remarked. His remarks come amid Egypt’s continuous efforts to mislead the international community over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam, which Ethiopia built on the Abay River. Ethiopia repeatedly expressed that the project is a cornerstone for regional cooperation and development strategy, aiming to provide electricity to millions. Despite years of negotiations, some facilitated by the African Union and other international actors, Egypt has failed to reach an agreement. In this context, Nagy’s statement adds a notable diplomatic voice to the debate, urging Cairo to recalibrate its strategy. According to the ambassador, it is time for Egypt to move beyond the political drama and focus on technical solutions that serve all parties. The ambassador’s comments reflect a broader frustration among observers that political posturing has derailed meaningful progress in negotiations. On September 9, 2025, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated GERD in a landmark ceremony attended by several African heads of state and international dignitaries. Among the notable guests were the presidents of Djibouti, South Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya, as well as the Prime Minister of Barbados and other high-level officials. In a continent where large-scale projects often rely on foreign loans, GERD stands out as a powerful example of self-reliant development. In his address, PM Abiy declared the dam a historic milestone for Ethiopia, comparing its significance to the victory of Adwa. He announced that the dam’s massive reservoir, named Nigat Lake ("Dawn Lake"), symbolizes Ethiopia’s emergence from a long era of poverty and dependence. The GERD was made possible through the contributions of millions of Ethiopians, from farmers and laborers to students and civil servants, who participated through bond purchases and grassroots fundraising. Now the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa, the GERD stands not only as a feat of engineering, but also as a monument to Ethiopian unity, resilience, and national will, a ray of hope for Africa’s future.

Ethiopia's Survival, Prosperity Linked to Red Sea, Nile Basin
Oct 19, 2025 1923
ADDIS Ababa, October 19, 2025 (ENA) -- The Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) has stressed that Ethiopia's survival and overall prosperity are profoundly intertwined with the Red Sea and the Nile Basin. Jointly organized by the IFA, the Defense War College, and Samara University, a conference entitled “The Two Water Systems and Ethiopia’s Strategic Autonomy: Exploring the Nile - Red Sea Nexus and the Afar Region’s Strategic Role," is being held in Samara. Speaking at the conference, Jafar Bediru, Executive Director of the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) underscored that Ethiopia's geopolitical vision is fundamentally linked to both the Red Sea and the Nile Basin, declaring that "as we approach the Red Sea, our power and vision expand."   Jafar recalled that for nearly three decades, research and policy discussions concerning the Red Sea within a geopolitical framework were deemed "unthinkable." He noted, however, that the current government has ended that era of silence, promoting open dialogue on issues vital to the country’s strategic independence. He explained that the conference's goal is to ensure Ethiopia's comprehensive and sustained benefit by making the Red Sea and the Nile integral parts of the national agenda. Jafar further emphasized the profound importance of access to the sea, stating it is not a matter of luxury, but rather of identity, reconciliation, and historical continuity. Mohamed Osman, President of Samara University, stated that the forum is crucial for fostering intellectual dialogue aimed at safeguarding Ethiopia’s national interests. He emphasized that Ethiopia’s aspiration for Red Sea access is deeply rooted in historical ties, geographical realities, and regional security considerations.   Commodore Tegegne Lata, Deputy Commander of the Ethiopian Navy for Combat Support Services, echoed this sentiment, asserting that Ethiopia’s overall national interests are inseparably linked to both the Nile and the Red Sea.   He added that efforts are currently underway to reorganize the Ethiopian Navy, which was disbanded several years ago. The goal is to build a modern, well-equipped, and capable force in terms of manpower, organization, and technology. The forum saw the attendance of senior government officials, including Fathi Mahdi, Deputy Chairperson of the House of Peoples’ Representatives’ Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee, along with officers of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, and invited guests.

Oct 18, 2025 2067
Addis Ababa, October 18, 2025 (ENA)—The eleventh session of Tana Forum, which is set to take place in Bahir Dar and Addis Ababa from October 24 to 26, 2025, will mainly focus on the security dynamics of the Horn of Africa, according to organizers of the forum. African Affairs Director-General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zerihun Abebe, said this year's forum comes at a crucial time for Ethiopia, the Horn region, and the broader African continent. Despite challenges, he added that the forum is highly anticipated by Ethiopians, Africans, and global stakeholders as the world shifts toward an increasingly unpredictable global landscape. “The importance of placing Africa at the center of discussions on this evolving order cannot be overstated,” the Diector-General stated, highlighting that the forum will explore the implications of global changes for Africa —whether they present challenges or opportunities. According to him, Bahir Dar will host the opening session, with subsequent discussions taking place at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa. The session in Bahir Dar will include three components: A general opening with high-level dignitaries, a gathering of special envoys for the first time to discuss the security dynamics and mutual concerns in the Horn of Africa, and a session for foreign affairs ministers from the region. “This unique gathering of special envoys is unprecedented,” Zerihun noted, stating that the exchange among envoys from various regional and international organizations aims to foster dialogue on pressing security dynamics affecting the Horn of Africa. The session in Bahir Dar will allow foreign affairs ministers to exchange perspectives on regional security, a crucial step for informing policy-making and assessing developments in the region. In this regard, the Tana Forum continues to serve as a vital platform for addressing security and governance issues in Africa, with the session expected to pave the way for future forums that will be more vibrant and organized, Zerihun underscored. On her part, Tana Forum Secretariat Head Lettie T. Longwe said the timing of the session is crucial for addressing the complexities faced by the continent amid global changes. The forum will focus on situating Africa within this evolving global context, she added, noting that participants will explore redefining Pan-Africanism in light of current challenges, including leadership dynamics, climate change, and global pressures. The forum will discuss mega trends and persistent threats of the Horn Africa region, alongside strategies for navigating transitions in a rapidly changing global landscape, it was learned. "Africa cannot operate as an island. What occurs on a global scale directly impacts the continent,” Longwe pointed out, underscoring the need for Africa to pursue greater influence in international governance, including discussions around securing a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council. Oct 20, 2025 1534

The commitment was highlighted during the opening of the 17th edition of the international training on post-conflict stabilization and reconstruction, currently underway in Addis Ababa. The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania in partnership with Ethiopia’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA). Addressing the event, IFA Executive Director Jafar Bedru noted that African countries are working diligently to transition from conflict and instability to lasting peace and stronger institution-building. Stating that participants from across Africa represented diverse nations, experiences and perspectives, he noted this diversity is one of the greatest strengths of the program. “Your presence here shows our common belief that post-conflict reconstruction must be led by local actors, local agency support through regional cooperation and strengthened by global partnership.” Regarding Ethiopia's commitment to lasting peace, he emphasized the launch and implementation of a National Dialogue and Transitional Justice process, which is designed to heal wounds and strengthen unity. Director General of Romania Agency for International Development, Daniela Dobre said the training program has evolved over the years from a technical force into a true platform for dialogue, exchange and partnership. It brought together civilian and military experts, policy makers and practitioners from across Africa and beyond, she further stated. “The last three editions that we held have shown us that collaboration and knowledge sharing are the most powerful tools for building peace and stability.” The five days program is targeted to share experiences, explore challenges, and build collective capacity to action as the program combines theoretical and practical training, it was indicated.

The forum will discuss mega trends and persistent threats of the Horn Africa region, alongside strategies for navigating transitions in a rapidly changing global landscape, it was learned. Africa Needs to Produce 45 percent of its Agrifood by 2030: AU Commissioner
Oct 21, 2025 583
Addis Ababa, October 21, 2025 (ENA) - The food security challenges of Africa need urgent and targeted action, African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati said. The 6th Ordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water, and Environment (ARDWE) is taking place in Addis Ababa. In his opening remarks, Vilakati emphasized the urgent need for targeted action to address Africa's food security challenges. He noted that the 6th ordinary session serves as a vital platform for reviewing progress on previous decisions and shaping the priorities for the next two years. "This session comes at a pivotal moment as we transition from the Malabo CAADP Agenda (2014–2025) to the Kampala CAADP Agenda (2026–2035)," he stated, highlighting the theme of building resilient and sustainable agrifood systems in Africa. Vilakati underscored the urgent goal of ensuring that 45percent of agrifood in Africa is produced locally by 2030. The Commissioner also referenced the recent Second Africa Climate Summit, which gathered over 25,000 delegates, highlighting Africa's role in global climate solutions. The summit culminated in the adoption of the African Leaders Addis Ababa Declaration on Climate Change, reinforcing Africa's commitment to resilient and green development, he noted. Despite its rich natural resources, Vilakati pointed out that millions of Africans remain food insecure, with the continent spending between 50 and 100 billion USD annually on food imports. He attributed the ongoing food security challenges to structural constraints such as degraded soils, limited access to quality seeds and fertilizers, and inadequate economic opportunities for youth and women. To address these issues, a 100-day plan was launched aimed at accelerating continental efforts toward food security, he said, noting that the plan focuses on key areas including soil health, fertilizer optimization, seed systems development, and job creation for youth. The four-day comprehensive discussions will be held on various reports and frameworks, including the 5th Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Biennial Review Report, and strategies to enhance Africa’s voice on climate change globally.
AU Urges African Communities to Embrace Communal Values for Mental Health
Oct 19, 2025 1224
Addis Ababa, October 19, 2025 (ENA) -- The African Union (AU) is calling on communities across the continent to prioritize holistic well-being, including economic security, social harmony, and health literacy, as the critical strategy for preventing Africa's growing mental health crisis. Speaking on World Mental Health Day 2025, Dr. Adamu Isah, Director of Medical and Health Services at the AU, emphasized that prevention must be a family-centered responsibility rooted in Africa’s communal values. "Mental health begins at home, extends into neighborhoods, and must be supported by sound public policy," Isah told ENA. "Whatever you do to ensure there is communication, understanding, and respect within your family, these are the foundations for preventing mental illness." The director stressed that mental health prevention is not merely a clinical intervention but a daily, domestic responsibility essential to African tradition. He highlighted that unmet basic needs, such as food insecurity, economic hardship, and lack of medical access, are key stressors contributing to mental health disorders. He also warned that the rise of Western individualism is eroding Africa’s traditional communal support systems, leading to increased isolation, especially among the youth. "Africans have the opportunity to protect their mental health by embracing their cultural and communal values, which emphasize social bonds, extended family, and mutual aid," he stated, urging a return to principles like brotherhood, spiritual support, and collective care. The urgency of this call has been tragically underscored by the recent death of Kenyan journalist Kimani Mbugua. The 29-year-old former reporter for Citizen TV and NTV, who was open about his battles with bipolar disorder, depression, and psychosis, died in a suspected suicide at a mental health rescue center in Mombasa. Mbugua's death has spotlighted the dangerous gaps in mental health care and the urgent need for robust, family-based prevention and support systems across the continent. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had supported Mbugua’s treatment, confirmed the death. Mbugua’s story reflects a broader systemic failure. Globally, over one billion people live with mental health conditions, and suicide remains a leading cause of death among young people. According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2025 Mental Health Atlas, the median national expenditure on mental health remains at just 2.1 percent of total health budgets globally, low-income countries invest less than 1 USD per capita, there is a severe shortage of specialized professionals, and only 9 percent of individuals with depression receive adequate treatment. Isah reiterated that effective prevention starts not in hospitals, but in homes and communities, through stable livelihoods, peaceful family relationships, early symptom recognition, and communal support. He urged African governments to invest in policies that empower families with the resources needed to provide care, security, and dignity. This year's World Mental Health Day theme, “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” highlights the growing crisis in zones where one in five individuals may suffer from mental health conditions. Isah concluded that Africa’s rich cultural heritage and emphasis on social cohesion provide a powerful foundation to combat mental illness. By strengthening families, fostering open communication, and promoting early intervention, the continent can transform its mental health crisis into a pathway for healing, resilience, and collective well-being.

Ethio Telecom Launches Znexus Service to Step towards Digitally Empowered Ethiopia
Oct 17, 2025 3653
Addis Ababa, October 17, 2025 (ENA) -- Ethio telecom has launched its groundbreaking Znexus service that aims at providing millions of Ethiopians with affordable access to smart feature phones, tablets, laptops, and, thin client PCs. The initiative is a crucial part of Ethiopia's Horizon Strategy, which seeks to transform the country into a digitally empowered society by 2027/2028. During the launch event, CEO Frehiwot Tamiru highlighted a significant digital divide in the nation by stating that out of approximately 85.9 million Ethio telecom customers, only 47 million are currently utilizing the internet.   The lack of internet access among the remaining customers is largely attributed to affordability issues and a gap in digital skills. These barriers have limited their access to essential services such as digital finance, e-services, and smart agriculture, she said. "The Znexus tele cloud service is designed to bridge this affordability and usage gap," Frehiwot stated, emphasizing the service's potential to enhance digital literacy and drive financial inclusion. By leveraging cloud-based technology, Znexus significantly reduces the cost of devices, as all applications will be hosted in the cloud, allowing users to access them without the need for high-end hardware. The devices made available through Znexus include feature phones, tablets, workstations, and laptops, all tailored to support Ethiopia's "Digital First" vision. "Znexus will undoubtedly help bridge the digital divide among our customers," Frehiwot asserted, reinforcing the service's role in promoting equitable access to technology.   Ethio telecom's experience, having already served over 800 institutions with Tele cloud services, has equipped them with valuable insights into customer needs and preferences. EVBB Secretary General Stresses Need for Vocational Training, Skill Dev't to Youth in Africa
Oct 15, 2025 2107
Addis Ababa, October 15, 2025 (ENA) -- There are immense opportunities in Africa for innovation and prosperity through vocational training and skill development tailored to modern labor market demands, European Association of Institutes for Vocational Training (EVBB) Secretary General, Theodor Grassos, noted. Stressing the significance of Africa's youthful population and the current wave of investments across the continent, he told ENA that the youth can be trained to be active participants in the labor market with the right curricula.   “I don’t see a lot of challenges. The key is the energy we all must bring together to move forward,” he said. Grassos underscored the critical need for equipping people with the skills necessary to support ongoing investments, noting that “people are, at the end of the day, the driving force for development.” He described the European Association of Institutes for Vocational Training's mission as connecting organizations and fostering collaboration between European, African, and Ethiopian expertise. The association is working to renew educational curricula, issue new certifications, and prepare individuals for the workforce, it was learned. According to the Secretary General, enhancing vocational training would ultimately empower Africa’s youth to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. On her part, Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer of the Cross-Functional Kryptr company based in Nigeria, Nwando Ogo, emphasized the urgent need for cultivating a skilled workforce to drive the African businesses and economy.   Africa's youthful demographic embodies vitality, strength, creativity, and innovation, she added. Furthermore, Ogo emphasized the need for intentional efforts to upskill the workforce, enabling young people to contribute effectively to industrialization and the green transition. The nature of industrialization has evolved, shifting from traditional engineering to embracing digital technologies and artificial intelligence, she said, adding that Africa “must be aware of the relevant skills needed today and ensure that training initiatives align with these shifts”. Ogo observed that many young people feel pressured to enter the workforce without fully exploring their career aspirations, stressing the need to align educational systems from primary to tertiary levels with the demands of today's society. She recommended the creation of supportive environments for the youth alongside educational curricula that prioritize upskilling without burdening young people with economic pressures. In this regard, Ogo praised Ethiopia’s commitment to youth development and job creation, citing initiatives like the effort to connect job seekers with available opportunities, ensuring a better match between employer demand and ready-to-work talent.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Embarks on Digital Transformation to Enhance Efficiency, Service Delivery
Oct 15, 2025 1740
Addis Ababa, October 15, 2025 (ENA) -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched its digital transformation program aimed at modernizing its operations, improving efficiency, and enhancing service delivery. Speaking at the opening of training organized for employees and junior diplomats today, Foreign Affairs Minister Gedion Timothewos stated that digitalization marks a significant step toward building a modern, transparent, and responsive foreign Service system aligned with Ethiopia’s digital economy strategy. Gedion said that the initiative, which is part of the reform and innovation activities of the 118-year-old public institution, will mainly focus on three key issues, including documentation and archives management, internal and external communications and correspondence, and streamlined and synergistic workflow. The previous analogue-based workflow had created bottlenecks, creating institutional inefficiency and delayed decision-making, the minister noted. Gedion added that for over a hundred years, much of our diplomatic communication, documentation, and administrative procedures were handled manually. This often led to data fragmentation, slower response, and difficulty in coordination between headquarters and missions abroad, the minister pointed out. According to him, the new digital portals — designed to handle both internal operations and consular services — will enable faster document processing, real-time data sharing, and improved coordination among Ethiopia’s embassies and consulates worldwide. “Through this transition, our diplomats and staff will be better equipped to respond swiftly to global developments and serve Ethiopian citizens abroad with greater efficiency,” he said.

American Professional Highlights Ethiopia’s Potential in Sports amid Challenges
Aug 24, 2025 11959
Addis Ababa, August 24, 2025 (ENA) -- Ethiopia possesses significant potential in sports like basketball despite challenges in nurturing young talent, according to Carlos Thornton, a former professional American football player who started Tasty Baller Sports Club & Coach Carlos on ProCamp Youth Development Initiative in Ethiopia. Carlos Thornton, who has spent the past 20 years providing basketball training for youths across Ethiopia, America, and other countries, said that Ethiopia has immense potential to develop its youth to become competitive basketball players. In an exclusive interview with ENA, Thornton, who transitioned from a successful football career in the U.S. to basketball in Israel, emphasized the importance of providing training to youths between 7 to 21 years old. “We have been committed to developing these students for the past 20 years,” he stated.   He believes that Ethiopian youth possess immense potential in sports like basketball, but many have not received the necessary support and training to thrive. “These kids (those he trains) can play at an international level,” he asserted, highlighting their ability to compete with teams from neighboring countries like South Sudan, envisioning that a great basketball international team is emerging from Ethiopia. "My ultimate goal is to see Ethiopians compete on the world stage, including at the Olympics", he stated. It’s about instilling a team concept, unity, and leadership, he noted, stressing the importance of developing both on-court skills and off-court character, Thornton emphasized. According to him, many youth in Ethiopia lack opportunities, with parents often prioritizing their children's careers with traditional paths in fields like medicine and engineering over sports.   Every child is not destined to be an architect or an engineer, and some are born to be athletes, he argued, emphasizing that providing these children with opportunity ignites their hopes and dreams. Moreover, he underlined the critical role of community involvement, urging Ethiopians to support the youth in achieving their aspirations. Ethiopians are brilliant, smart, and affiliated, Thornton stated, emphasizing that commitment and dedicating time to developing youth talents are essential. Finally, he expressed his optimism about Ethiopia's future in basketball, taking the view that with increased support and unity, the nation can foster a new generation of outstanding athletes in this regard.

Investors Express Strong Interest in Producing, Assembling Electric Vehicles in Ethiopia
Oct 21, 2025 473
Addis Ababa, October 21, 2025 (ENA) -Foreign and local investors are demonstrating significant interest in establishing electric vehicle production and assembly factories in Ethiopia, Transport and Logistics State Minister Bareo Hassen said. The State Minister revealed that foreign investors, including companies from the Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, and other European nations, have submitted requests to manufacture and assemble electric vehicles in Ethiopia. According to him, the government has developed a comprehensive strategy to evaluate and process the investment proposals. The adoption of electric vehicles represents a crucial component in Ethiopia's environmental protection strategy, offering substantial benefits in reducing pollution and mitigating climate change impacts. Beyond environmental advantages, the electric vehicle sector promises considerable economic returns, including reduced dependence on fossil fuel imports, lower vehicle maintenance costs, enhanced foreign currency saving, and expanded investment opportunities in green employment sector. Bareo outlined Ethiopia's ambitious target to increase the number of electric vehicles operating on national roads to over 500,000 units in the coming ten years. The government's strategic plan aims to achieve 99 percent electric vehicle import share, building on current progress that has seen electric vehicles reach seven percent of total vehicle imports, the State Minister elaborated. Demonstrating institutional commitment to the sector, the government has mandated that all new vehicle procurements for government use must be electric vehicles. This policy initiative is designed to encourage private sector adoption of electric vehicle technology. Looking ahead, electric vehicles will be distinguished by special green license plates and will benefit from various government incentives, Bareo confirmed, signaling the government's continued support for sustainable transportation solutions.

This was made public during an inaugural workshop convened in Addis Ababa today co-hosted by AUDA-NEPAD and the Water and Land Resource Centre of African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) and other key partners, and the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT). AfrioCAT will serve as the official WOCAT Regional Cluster for Africa, is expected to significantly boost regional efforts in Sustainable Land Management (SLM) and Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). Edna Chidule Kalima, Programme Officer for Climate Change within the AUDA-NEPAD Directorate of Agriculture, Food Security, and Environmental Sustainability, underscored the critical role of AfrioCAT. AfrioCAT would focus on sustainable land management approaches and technologies--instrumental to supporting ongoing work with diverse stakeholders and partners, she affirmed. This collaborative effort is essential for Africa to attain food security and resilience while actively preventing further land degradation across the continent. The Programme Officer added that AUDA-NEPAD’s programmes and projects are designed to ensure that African states achieve self-reliance and food security, citing the success of restoring over 100 million hectares of land in various African nations, including Ethiopia, Gabon, Malawi, Rwanda, and Niger, representing five regional economic communities. The work also includes an emphasis on soil fertility and health, contributing to the overall goal that Africa feeds itself and enhances the livelihoods of its people. AfrioCAT's creation is a key strategic step in making Africa’s voice on land matters more prominent on the global stage, it was learnt. Nicole Harari, a research scientist from the WOCAT executive team, noted that the inaugural workshop in Addis Ababa, co-hosted by AUDA-NEPAD and the Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC), brought together practitioners, researchers, and government officials. The main objective, she pointed out, is to strategize and formally structure this new network to improve and promote sustainable land management. Ethiopian Diaspora Demand Egypt to Change Counterproductive Posture on GERD
Apr 4, 2023 119568
Addis Ababa April 4/2023 (ENA) Ethiopians in the Diaspora have called on Egypt to change its counterproductive posture and find mutually beneficial agreements on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In a statement the diaspora issued yesterday, they noted that Ethiopia is the main source of the Nile by contributing 86 percent of the water to the Nile basin states while utilizing less than 1 percent of the potential for hydroelectric power. Ethiopians are currently building the GERD on the Blue Nile that is financed entirely by Ethiopians and is a crucial project for the country's development as it will provide clean, renewable energy and lift millions out of poverty. About 65 percent of the 122 million of Ethiopia's population have no access to any form of electricity. The much-needed electricity will facilitate economic growth for Ethiopia and the region, the statement elaborated. The dam will promote regional cooperation and integration while offering opportunity for eleven countries of the Nile Basin to work together to manage the river's resources more efficiently and effectively, it added. The GERD is being built with the highest environmental and technical standards to achieve the objectives of the national electrification program and the execution of Ethiopia’s Climate-Resilient Green Economy Strategy. According to the statement, Ethiopia has provided scientific evidence and expert testimonies that GERD will not significantly affect the flow of water downstream, and provided compelling arguments for the need for equitable use of the Nile's resources by all countries in the region. The diaspora further said they understand that the GERD has raised concerns in Egypt about the downstream effects on the Nile's flow and water availability since Egyptians have been misinformed about the GERD for many years. But on the contrary, the dam will provide several benefits to Egypt and Sudan, including increased water flow during dry seasons and decreased flooding events. “We want to assure Egyptians that Ethiopians are committed to fair and equitable use of the Nile's waters without harming our downstream neighbors. We recognize that the Nile River is a shared resource, and we support finding a mutually beneficial solution.” As Ethiopians in the Diaspora, we reiterate our support for fair and equitable use of the Nile River and call on the Egyptian people and Egyptian Diaspora to question the misinformation about the GERD in Egypt's mainstream media and embrace the spirit of friendship and cooperation by understanding that the GERD is a project of great national importance to Ethiopians that will benefit Egyptians by ensuring a reliable and predictable supply of water, that Ethiopians have the right to use their water resources for the development of its people and economy, in accordance with the principles of equitable and reasonable utilization without causing significant harm. Efforts to destabilize Ethiopia by the regime in Egypt, will indeed affect the historical and diplomatic relations dating back to several thousand years, the long-term interest of the Egyptian people and make Ethiopians less trusting in cooperating on the GERD and future hydropower projects on the Nile, they warned. The diaspora groups urged Egyptian leaders to engage in constructive dialogue with the leaders of Ethiopia regarding the GERD and steer away from their counterproductive posture of calling for a “binding agreement” on the GERD filling and the subsequent operations as an imposing instrument on water sharing that Ethiopians will never accept. The GERD can be a source of cooperation and collaboration between our two countries rather than a source of conflict, they underscored. "Ethiopians believe that, through dialogue and understanding, peaceful and equitable agreements that benefit all parties involved can be realized to build a brighter future for all people in the Nile basin. Belligerent positions by Egyptian leaders stating ‘all options are open’ are contrary to the spirit of the 2015 Declaration of Principles signed by Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt." According to the statement, such postures will surely harm Egypt's long-term interest and impede trustful cooperation with the Ethiopian people and government. They asked Arab League and its member states to refrain from interfering in the issue of the GERD, which is the sole concern of the three riparian countries (Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt) and their shared regional organization (the African Union), which is mediating the talks to find ‘African Solutions to African Problems.’ The issues remaining on the table at the trilateral negotiations under the auspices of the African Union are being narrowed to a handful of critical matters on equity and justice, on which the Arab league nations have no business or legal right to be involved.
Africa’s Sustainable Growth Hinges on Science, Technology and Innovation: Experts
Mar 3, 2023 118523
Addis Ababa March 3/2023/ENA/ Achieving the ambitious targets of the 2030 and 2063 Agendas of Africa requires leveraging the power of science, technology, and innovation (STI), according to experts. A press release issued by the ECA stated experts at the Ninth African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development have emphasized the crucial role of STI as a key driver and enabler for ensuring economic growth, improving well-being, mitigating the effects of climate change, and safeguarding the environment. They also underscored the need to strengthen national and regional STI ecosystems by fostering innovation, promoting entrepreneurship, and investing in research and development. By doing so, the experts said that Africa can harness the potential of STI to accelerate its socio-economic progress and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and the African Union's Agenda by 2063. The session, held on 2 March 2023, builds on the recommendations of the Fifth African Science, Technology, and Innovation Forum, which accentuates the central role of STI and digitalization during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for the necessary infrastructures for the development of STI, plans, and policies that are action-oriented towards strengthening its full implantation. The experts highlighted that despite advances in STI, significant gaps remain in bridging the scientific and technological divide between developed countries and Africa. The highly uneven global distribution of scientific capacity and access to knowledge threatens to derail the goal of leaving no one behind, which is the central and transformative promise of Agenda 2030. “We need a clear political will from governments to ensure science, technology, and innovation is a reality. By doing so our education systems will be capacitated to deliver knowledge that is vital to solving Africa’s sustainability challenges,” Niger Higher Education and Research Minister Mamoudou Djibo said. The strategy includes the establishment of universities as centers for excellence and investments in education, technical competencies, and training in the fields of science, technology, research, and innovation. These initiatives are crucial in accelerating progress towards achieving global goals. However, in order to fully leverage the potential of STI, significant investments in research and development are required. National systems also need to be strengthened, Namibia Information and Communication Technologies Deputy Minister Emma Theophilus, stated adding that “strengthening our national systems for STI is a key game changer for rapid structural transformation in Africa. Leveraging the digital transformation can achieve a stronger, smarter, and more inclusive recovery.” Emerging evidence suggests that an STI and digital Africa can be a springboard to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs and fulfill the aspirations of Agenda 2063.

Egypt's Colonial Nile Water Hegemony Outdated
Oct 16, 2025 2243
By Henok T. Historically, Egypt and Sudan constructed major dams over the Nile, notably the Aswan High Dam and the Sennar Dam, without notifying and seeking consent from other basin states including Ethiopia. However, Ethiopia, constructed GERD notifying the lower stream states. Ethiopia’s move is a diplomatic, and brotherly gesture—in stark contrast to Egypt’s colonial mindset of utilizing the Nile waters with Egypt. Ethiopia committed to the Declaration of Principles (DoP) in 2015, which acknowledging the need for cooperation, fair use, and non-harm, setting a standard for consultation, nullifying the colonial era agreement which does not recognize the source of Abay River, Ethiopia, which contributes over 86 percent of water to downstream states. Simply because Ethiopia is the source of the Abay River, Egypt had been a safe haven for violent groups engaged in destabilizing Ethiopia. Egypt had been providing trainings and logistics to separatist groups to undermine Ethiopia. Egypt has never wanted Ethiopia to prosper. Egypt was fanning tensions between Ethiopia and its neighbors. It is against this background that the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a historic milestone for Ethiopians and beyond. The successful completion of the dam is more than just a national achievement, expanding our strategic horizons and provides a foundation for implementing yet another mega projects in a united, forward-looking and geopolitical strategy, setting priority to African solidarity. Ethiopia has never acted unilaterally. From the very start of the GERD project in 2011, Ethiopia has pursued open dialogue through the tripartite mechanism with Sudan and Egypt, repeatedly reaffirming its commitment to the Declaration of Principles (DoP) signed in Khartoum in 2015 — a document that Egypt itself endorsed. That declaration clearly recognizes Ethiopia’s right to utilize its natural resources for development. The GERD is not a political tool, nor a project designed to control the Nile. It is a purely hydro-electric facility—a clean-energy investment built without external loans or conditionalities. The dam generates power, not scarcity; light, not confrontation. Contrary to the assertions made in Cairo, the controlled filling and operation of the dam have not caused harm to downstream nations. Independent hydrological analyses, confirm that fluctuations in river flow are within normal seasonal variations. No farmer in Egypt or Sudan has been deprived of a single drop of water because of the GERD. Ethiopia continues to release water in accordance with the dam’s engineering design and natural hydrological cycles. As the country that contributes over 86 percent of the Nile waters, Ethiopia bears the highest responsibility to protect the basin’s sustainability. It is therefore illogical to accuse the upstream source nation of deliberately undermining the very resource on which its own people depend. The Nile is a shared African river, not a colonial possession. Development along it should follow the principle of 21st century, based on mutual benefit as enshrined in international water law. Egypt and Ethiopia are Africa’s two most populous nations and among its five largest economies. Their future prosperity lies not in accusation and mistrust but in partnership. Ethiopia’s hydropower capacity can supply clean electricity to its neighbors and beyond — stabilizing grids, reducing carbon emissions, and cutting the heavy costs of fossil-fuel imports. Storing water in Ethiopia’s cool highlands reduces evaporation losses that plague Lake Nasser, saving billions of cubic meters annually. Egypt as a downstream country, benefits from water conservation at the GERD instead of wastage of billions of cubic meters of water to evaporation and in downstream flood. GERD is a mega continental energy project that would gear Africa’s economic integration in realizing its long term vision of power grid and prosperity of the continent. During the the inauguration of GERD, Prime Minister Abiy stressed that the dam is comparable to the victory of Adwa, heralding a new era of prosperity for Ethiopia. "We have heard history. We have seen history. We have learned history. But today, we were able to become the generation chosen by God to make history and stand upon it to speak," Abiy emphasized. The GERD, which has created a massive reservoir with a capacity of 74 billion cubic meters of water, has been named "Nigat Lake (Dawn Lake). “This lake has brought with it a wealth greater than Ethiopia's GDP. This generation has accomplished a great deed with the Renaissance Dam. The era of begging has ended, ” he underscored. Abiy described the GERD as “the biggest mega project in the history of the Black people” and extended invitation to visit what the nation has accomplished. “The Nile is a gift from God to all the peoples who live along its banks. We can only secure it if we care for it together,” Prime Minister Abiy reiterated. It is time to return to that spirit — the spirit of shared destiny and mutual respect. Only through cooperation can the Nile continue to nourish not just two nations, but an entire continent.

The transformation wasn't lost on anyone. Where once narrow, difficult paths challenged pedestrians, wide boulevards and stunning walkways now welcome millions. The integration of lush greenery, public plazas, and vibrant streets created a canvas where ancient traditions could flourish with renewed dignity. For Boke Eyi, a celebrant the capital's new face had become more than just infrastructure. "The changes in Addis Ababa's appearance create great inspiration to carry out other development works," he noted. "Previously, the roads, especially for pedestrians, were not comfortable. Now it has become very attractive and comfortable for travel. The development works done in the city in these two years have changed the face of the city. It has become attractive not only for Ethiopians but also for foreign visitors." Abba Gada Gobena Hola said Irreecha, which all nations and nationalities eagerly awaited, was celebrated vibrantly at Hora Finfinnee. "All nations and nationalities eagerly await Irreecha, and it was celebrated magnificently at Hora Finfinnee," Gobena declared. "All Ethiopians celebrated it magnificently; and the festival maintained its cultural values and was celebrated with splendor." The festival's inclusive nature shone brightly as Ethiopians and even foreign visitors joined the celebration. Children laughed as they splashed in the sacred waters, elders shared stories under acacia trees, and young people danced to rhythms that have echoed across generations. The sight of diverse faces united in celebration painted a picture of the Ethiopia many dreams of – one where differences become strengths and unity emerges from diversity As the day progressed and the sun began its descent, the green grass floating on Hora Finfinnee's waters looked like prayers made visible. Each blade carried hopes for abundant harvests, peaceful coexistence, and continued progress. The waters that have witnessed countless Irreecha celebrations now reflected not just the ancient sky, but the gleaming facades of a modernizing capital. Tomorrow, the celebration continues in Bishoftu, where Hora Arsedi will bring together even more communities in thanksgiving. But today's celebration at Hora Finfinnee has already achieved something remarkable – it has shown how ancient wisdom and modern progress can dance together; how traditions can flourish in transformed spaces, and how a people's gratitude can encompass both the blessings of the past and the promises of the future. As the celebrants dispersed carrying blessed grass and hearts full of hope, they left behind waters that had witnessed not just another Irreecha, but a celebration that perfectly captured a nation in transition – honoring where it came from while embracing where it is headed. In this season of thanksgiving, Ethiopia itself has something to be grateful for.
