Prime Minister Abiy Inaugurates Megech Dam to Boost Irrigation, Water Security

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the Megech Irrigation Dam Project, marking a major milestone in boosting irrigation and development in historic Gondar and surrounding communities.

In a social media post, the Prime Minister said implementation challenges that had delayed the project for years were overcome through the Medemer philosophy, enabling the realization of this vital development project.

With a storage capacity of 185 million cubic meters, the dam is expected to irrigate more than 17,000 hectares of farmland, directly benefiting tens of thousands of farmers.

It will also provide a reliable supply of clean drinking water to Gondar and nearby towns.

Beyond irrigation and water supply, the project is expected to unlock wider economic opportunities through urban agriculture, large-scale fisheries, and tourism resorts, creating jobs for local youth and stimulating economic growth.

PM Abiy further  stressed that Gondar requires further development and called on the public to actively contribute to its progress.

“While this success stems from rigorous monitoring, Gondar still deserves much more development. I urge the public to actively participate in its development. We remain dedicated to ensuring Ethiopia’s progress is inclusive, benefiting all regions and citizens,” the PM underscored.

The Premier reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring that Ethiopia’s development is inclusive, extending its benefits to all regions and citizens.
