Tigray Caretaker Administration Key to Lasting Peace, Development: TDP Chairman

Addis Ababa, October 17, 2026 (ENA) —The federal government’s newly established six-month caretaker administration in the Tigray Region is a necessary and positive step toward ensuring lasting peace, promoting development and restoring constitutional order, Tigray Democratic Party (TDP) Chairman Aregawi Berhe said.

Ethiopia’s federal government announced today the establishment of a caretaker administration mandated to govern the Tigray Region for six months, with a focus on maintaining public services, ensuring peace and security, and preparing the ground for elections.

The administration is expected to prioritize Ethiopia’s national interests, territorial integrity and the fundamental interests of the people of Tigray.

Until an elected government is established, the caretaker administration will focus on the day-to-day delivery of public services and creating favorable conditions for the next elections.

It will not undertake decisions with broader, long term strategic implications and will operate in accordance with directives issued by the federal government.

Speaking to ENA, Aregawi welcomed the establishment of the administration, describing it as an important step toward addressing the region’s challenges and creating conditions for lasting peace and development.

He commended the federal government’s commitment to bringing comprehensive change to the region, stressing that the caretaker administration would have a significant role in improving the lives of the people of Tigray.

Aregawi urged members of the administration to discharge their responsibilities diligently and transparently, emphasizing the need for strong oversight to ensure that development initiatives deliver tangible benefits to the public.
He also underscored the importance of discipline and accountability in carrying out the administration’s key responsibilities, which include preparing for elections, maintaining peace and security, restoring government institutions, rehabilitating damaged infrastructure and facilitating the return of displaced people.

The TDP chairman further called for effective implementation of the administration’s mandate, saying its success would be critical to advancing sustainable peace, development and constitutional governance in the region.

Aregawi reaffirmed his party’s readiness to provide the necessary support, working alongside the people of Tigray to promote peace, advance development and help restore constitutional order.
