PM Abiy Stresses Investing in Meteorological Infrastructure, Data Systems Essential for Climate Resilience

Addis Ababa, October 13, 2026 (ENA) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed underscored that strengthening national institutions, upgrading technological capacity, and expanding data infrastructure at the Ethiopia Meteorology Institute are vital steps to enhancing the nation’s climate resilience and supporting key economic sectors.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited the Ethiopia Meteorology Institute, highlighting the long-standing institution's critical role in advancing national development and building climate resilience across the country.

 

Following the visit, the Prime Minister noted that the engagement reaffirmed the necessity of continuous meteorological data collection, scientific research, and technological advancement to build national capacity in anticipating and responding to changing weather patterns and climate conditions.

Highlighting the need for targeted institutional development, Prime Minister Abiy stated that strengthening institutions like the Ethiopia Meteorology Institute requires sustained investments in human capacity, modern technologies, and data infrastructure.

He noted that these strategic investments are critical to improving the essential services on which key national sectors—including agriculture, water resource management, public health, aviation, and disaster risk management—heavily depend.

 

The Prime Minister emphasized the crucial importance of early warning systems, noting their vital role in helping the nation anticipate risks, identify areas where interventions are most needed, and engage in a timely and effective manner.

Reliable meteorological data, when translated into actionable information, saves lives, protects livelihoods, and supports better decision-making across all levels of governance.

Prime Minister Abiy further observed that effective meteorological work extends far beyond satellite observation.

 

He pointed out that it relies fundamentally on a robust, nationwide network of data collection stations and data centers where information is gathered, processed, and analyzed to inform timely, life-saving action.
