Ethiopian Flag Symbolizes Unity, National Consensus: Bikila Hurissa
Addis Ababa, October 12, 2026 (ENA) —The Ethiopian flag symbolizes unity and national consensus, bringing together the country’s diverse cultural, religious, and linguistic communities, according to Bikila Hurissa, Coordinator for Democratic System Building with the rank of Minister.
The 19th National Flag Day is being celebrated under the theme "Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity," marked by the national flag flying at government institutions, Ethiopian embassies and Ethiopian ships.
The Prosperity Party Head Office marked the occasion in the presence of senior party leaders and staff.
Speaking at the event, Bikila Hurissa said the national flag represents a shared identity that unites Ethiopians despite their differences.
He stressed that the occasion should serve as a reminder of citizens' responsibility to preserve the country’s independence and sovereignty, a legacy safeguarded and passed down by past generations.
Paying tribute to Ethiopia’s ancestors, Bikila noted that their sacrifices preserved the nation’s independence and shaped its current standing.
He emphasized that honoring history requires recognizing the continued efforts needed to protect the country's sovereignty across all dimensions.
Bikila urged citizens to translate words into action by building a nation that achieves economic sovereignty, overcomes poverty, and secures lasting prosperity.
He called for collective effort across all sectors to increase productivity, lift the country out of poverty, and build a self-sufficient economy capable of fulfilling its needs and supporting others.
Such unified action, he added, will help safeguard Ethiopia’s sovereignty and ensure the national flag continues to fly high.
