Egypt Kills over 200 Sudanese Miners

Addis Ababa, October 11, 2026 (ENA) — Egyptian air force has attacked and killed at least 200 Sudanese miners, and left a large number of wounded, in Sudan's North Al-Wadi area.

The airstrikes reportedly struck artisanal mining sites in the Shamal al-Wadi area of Sudan’s northeastern Red Sea region on Saturday, October 10, as miners were preparing for work, according to Sudan Tribune.

Survivors said the strikes destroyed miners’ shelters and hit excavation sites, leaving workers dead, wounded or trapped beneath collapsed ground.

The area hosts traditional mining operations where thousands of people depend on extracting gold and other minerals for their livelihoods.

The remote terrain and limited access to medical facilities have compounded the difficulties of rescuing survivors and treating the wounded.

The reported attack has sparked outrage among Sudanese groups.

The Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS) condemned the Egyptian military action as a violation of Sudan’s sovereignty, arguing that the killing of civilians raises serious questions about Cairo’s intentions toward Sudan’s natural resources.

The alliance also criticized the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), accusing them of complacency toward Egypt amid Cairo’s support for the authorities based in Port Sudan.

The allegations come against the backdrop of growing tensions over artisanal gold mining and border control.

Sudan’s gold sector provides livelihoods for millions of people, while the country’s ongoing conflict has further intensified competition over mineral wealth and trade routes.
