Ethiopia to Celebrate 19th National Flag Day

Addis Ababa, October 9, 2026 (ENA) — Ethiopia will celebrate its 19th National Flag Day on October 12 under the theme “Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity,” according to a press release issued by the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR).

President Taye Atske-Selassie is expected to attend the main celebration at the HPR headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The ceremony will begin with an address by President Taye, followed by a nationwide oath-taking ceremony in front of the national flag, to be led live by the President of the Supreme Court.

The official flag-raising ceremony will then be conducted by President Taye, accompanied by the Ethiopian National Defense Force Marching Band and the Guard of Honor.

National Flag Day is observed annually on October 12, the second month of the Ethiopian calendar, in accordance with Article 2 of Flag Proclamation No. 863/2006, as amended.

The observance recognizes the national flag as a symbol of Ethiopian identity, sovereignty and dignity. It also aims to promote respect for the flag, reinforce shared national values and strengthen unity among the country’s diverse communities.

The HPR, which coordinates the annual commemoration, said this year’s celebrations would feature ceremonies reflecting the country’s current national realities.

Expected attendees at the main event include members of the HPR and the House of Federation, heads of institutions accountable to the HPR, senior Ethiopian National Defense Force officers, religious leaders, representatives of the Ancient Ethiopian Patriots Association and other invited guests.

Beyond the main celebration in Addis Ababa, National Flag Day will be commemorated across regional states, city administrations, government offices and schools, as well as at Ethiopian embassies and consulates worldwide.
