Medemer Government Emerges from Ethiopian People’s Resilience: Former Speaker Abadula
Addis Ababa, October 6, 2026 (ENA)—Former Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives Abadula Gemeda described the formation of Ethiopia’s new Medemer Government as a reflection of the resilience, determination and political participation of the Ethiopian people.
Ethiopia has entered a new five-year political and institutional chapter as the newly elected House of Peoples’ Representatives convened on Monday, formally opening the new parliamentary term and setting in motion the constitutional process for the formation of the federal government.
The transition follows the June 1 Seventh General Election, one of the country’s largest electoral exercises, in which more than 54 million citizens registered to participate, according to figures from the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).
The 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives subsequently appointed Dr. Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, marking the beginning of a new five-year government term.
Addressing the House following his appointment, Prime Minister Abiy said the 7th General Election carried profound significance for Ethiopia, describing it as a practical demonstration of the country’s growing democratic culture.
He noted that more than 54 million citizens took part in the electoral process, making a significant contribution to the development of Ethiopia’s democratic system despite the challenges, threats and uncertainties surrounding the election.
Speaking to ENA on the formation of the Medemer Government, Abadula said its establishment should be understood within the broader context of Ethiopia’s development and political journey over the past several years.
He noted that the government had undertaken numerous development projects across the country, while the latest general election was conducted amid significant economic and development transformations.
According to Abadula, forces opposed to Ethiopia’s progress mounted extensive efforts to disrupt the electoral process. However, he said, the Ethiopian people demonstrated resilience and played a crucial role in ensuring that the election was successfully concluded.
“This practically confirmed that the Medemer Government is a product of the resilience of the Ethiopian people,” Abadula said.
He further argued that Ethiopia’s ability to endure from ancient times to the present has not been due to the absence of adversaries seeking to weaken or fragment the country, but rather to the resilience and determination of its people.
Abadula said the election had also demonstrated, in practical terms, that the Ethiopian people would not cooperate with forces seeking to undermine the country’s unity and stability.
The former Speaker expressed hope that the formation of the new Medemer Government would enable Ethiopia to translate its national potential into further concrete achievements and strengthen its standing at regional and international levels.
He said the new administration is expected to accelerate the country’s development trajectory, advance lasting peace, improve citizens’ livelihoods and further enhance Ethiopia’s regional and international influence.
