Medemer Philosophy Answer to Changing Global Order, Dev't of Ethiopia: PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (ENA)—The Ethiopian Medemer philosophy provides a harmonious and strategic framework for the country to navigate and benefit from the rapidly changing global order, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed noted today.

Addressing the opening of the first regular session of the first-year term of the 7th House of People’s Representatives, the newly elected Prime Minister reflected on global developments, Ethiopia’s historical experiences and the country’s ongoing efforts to build a stronger and more self-reliant nation.

In his speech, he stressed that Ethiopia’s ability to benefit from these changes depends on its preparedness, noting that countries which fail to anticipate global shifts risk bearing the costs of transformation.

Ethiopia’s historical experience demonstrates the consequences of failing to prepare for major changes, including previous industrial and technological revolutions, the PM said.

The country must therefore learn from past setbacks and develop the capacity to anticipate emerging opportunities and challenges.

PM Abiy said the changing geopolitical landscape in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Middle East is creating both challenges and opportunities for Ethiopia, particularly given the country’s strategic geographic position.

He emphasized that responding to such changes requires more than dissatisfaction with existing conditions. It requires organized thinking, institutions, experimentation and continuous improvement.

In this regard, the Prime Minister identified Medemer as a uniquely Ethiopian approach to building national capacity and responding to a changing world.

He explained that Medemer philosophy is based on the idea of bringing together Ethiopia’s diverse strengths, experiences, history, culture and values to create greater national capacity.

Rather than simply adopting solutions developed elsewhere, Ethiopia needs to develop approaches that reflect its own realities and historical context, the Premier underscored.

He further stressed the importance of modernizing Ethiopia’s statehood while drawing on indigenous ideas and values that can strengthen national cohesion and development.

The philosophy of Medemer should be reflected across the country’s economic and institutional transformation, including macroeconomic reform, security, manufacturing, agriculture, education, health, energy and foreign relations.

Medemer goes beyond a political concept, serving as a framework for mobilizing Ethiopia’s collective potential, strengthening institutions and preparing the country to adapt to and help shape the emerging global order, PM Abiy said.

He finally called for continued efforts to build national capacity and institutions capable of anticipating global changes and turning them into opportunities for Ethiopia’s development.
