House of Federation Elects Muferihat Kamil Speaker

Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (ENA)— The House of Federation has elected Muferihat Kamil as its Speaker and Desta Ledamo as Deputy Speaker during the ongoing first regular session of the first working year of Ethiopia’s newly elected government.

The House of Federation also elected chairpersons and deputy chairpersons for four standing committees as part of the formation of its leadership and working structures for the new term.

The elections come as Ethiopia begins a new parliamentary chapter following the recent national election and the formation of the new federal government.

The House of Federation, one of the two chambers of Ethiopia’s federal parliament, plays a central constitutional role in matters relating to the federal system, including the interpretation of the Constitution and issues concerning the rights and interests of nations, nationalities and peoples.

The formation of the House’s leadership and standing committees sets the institutional framework for its work.
