Culture and Sport Minister Calls for Unity at Meskel-Demera Celebration

Addis Ababa, September 26, 2026 (ENA) —Ethiopians should join hands and work together to build a prosperous country and advance national interests, including Ethiopia’s quest for seaport, Culture and Sport Minister Shewit Shanka said.

The Minister made the call today while addressing the Meskel-Demera celebration at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa.

 

Shewit said Meskel-Demera is more than a religious celebration, highlighting its importance in preserving Ethiopia’s history, identity, cultural values and national unity.

The celebration reflects Ethiopia’s traditional values and indigenous knowledge, while also strengthening social ties and unity among the country’s diverse population.

 

She also commended the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church for preserving the celebration across generations, enabling it to be passed on to the current generation and recognized as a cultural treasure of global significance.

The Minister noted that Ethiopia has made development gains in various sectors through hard work and the collective efforts and cooperation of its people, calling on Ethiopians to build on the achievements.

She likened Ethiopians’ collective effort to the pieces of wood brought together for the Demera bonfire, stressing the importance of standing together to advance the country’s national goals.

 

She concluded by thanking all those who have worked to preserve and sustain the celebration and wished Ethiopians peace, love, health and prosperity on the occasion.
