PM Abiy Extends Best Wishes to Ethiopian Christians on Meskel-Demera Festival

Addis Ababa, September 26, 2026 (ENA) —Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has extended his best wishes to Ethiopian Christians celebrating the UNESCO-inscribed Meskel-Demera festival.

Ethiopian Christians mark Meskel on September 27 to commemorate the discovery of the True Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.

In his eve message issued this morning, Prime Minister Abiy said Meskel is celebrated across Ethiopia not only as a religious observance but also as a cherished cultural tradition that brings families, communities and society together.

He noted that families gather, bonfires are lit, and cities and surrounding communities come together in a shared celebration.

From the preparation of the wood to the burning of incense, the festival demonstrates the power of unity and collective strength, the Prime Minister said.

He added that the commemoration of Meskel mobilizes the strength of Ethiopians and reinforces the collective national spirit needed to build a stronger Ethiopia.

“Ethiopia will shine and remain proud forever through the efforts of its children,” Prime Minister Abiy said, extending his Meskel greetings to the Ethiopian people.

“May the Creator bless Ethiopia and its people,” he added.
