PM Abiy, Malaysian Counterpart Anwar Ibrahim Discuss Expanding Strategic Partnerships

Addis Ababa, September 12, 2026 (ENA) —Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim have discussed ways to expand economic and development cooperation between Ethiopia and Malaysia, with a focus on investment, tourism, renewable energy and industrial development.

The two leaders held talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, building on the momentum generated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s historic visit to Addis Ababa in November 2025.

Prime Minister Abiy said the meeting provided an opportunity to further strengthen the growing Ethiopia-Malaysia partnership and explore new areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Their discussions highlighted opportunities to expand investment and tourism ties, advance renewable energy cooperation and deepen collaboration in the lead-up to COP32, according to PM Abiy’s social media post.

The leaders also explored areas where Ethiopia could benefit from Malaysia’s experience in industrial parks, manufacturing and productivity, particularly as Ethiopia pursues its broader economic transformation agenda.

Ethiopia and Malaysia, Prime Minister Abiy noted, have significant potential to build a stronger economic partnership that creates new opportunities in investment, technology transfer, skills development and sustainable development.

The renewed engagement underscores the two countries’ growing interest in translating their longstanding ties into a more dynamic partnership centered on trade, investment, technology and shared development priorities, it was said.
