Prime Minister Abiy, Modi Vow to Elevate Ethiopia-India Strategic Partnership

Addis Ababa, September 12, 2026 (ENA) —Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first official visit to India, with the two leaders exploring new avenues to deepen the longstanding Ethiopia- India partnership.

The discussions focused on expanding defence cooperation, technology transfer, capacity building and mining, while also strengthening collaboration toward COP32, reflecting a shared interest in translating political goodwill into practical and mutually beneficial cooperation.

In a social media post, Prime Minister Abiy described his meeting with Modi as an opportunity to advance bilateral ties and unlock the significant potential that remains between the two countries.

“Ethiopia and India share deep historic ties, longstanding cultural connections, and strong bonds between our people,” Abiy said, emphasizing the need to build on this foundation through technology, skills, investment, sustainable development and stronger people-to-people ties.

 

The Prime Minister underscored that the time is right to transform the two countries’ historic friendship into a more ambitious partnership capable of creating new opportunities and delivering tangible benefits for both peoples.
