Diaspora Key Partner in Implementing Agenda 2063: AUC Chairperson

Addis Ababa, August 31, 2026 (ENA) —The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has reaffirmed that the African diaspora is an integral part of the African family and an essential partner in the implementation of Agenda 2063.

AUC Chairperson Youssouf made the remarks in a message issued in connection with the International Day for People of African Descent.

The Chairperson also emphasized that Africans and people of African descent belong to one family, united by a shared history and a common aspiration to build a better future together.

In his message, Youssouf also extended his warmest wishes to the hundreds of millions of people of African descent across the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.

He further clarified that the day celebrates the deep bonds connecting Africa with its diaspora and highlights the shared identity and historical ties that unite Africans and people of African descent across continents and generations.

As the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034), centered on recognition, justice and development, continues, the Chairperson stated the Commission’s commitment to advancing these objectives and to combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and all related forms of intolerance.

The African Union recognizes its diaspora as an integral part of the African family and an essential partner in the implementation of Agenda 2063, according to the statement.

The commitment is also reflected in the African Union Decade of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations (2026–2035), efforts to develop a Common African Position on reparations, and initiatives to strengthen partnerships with the Caribbean, Latin America and African communities around the world.

Youssouf also paid tribute to the contributions of people of African descent to the development, culture and progress of societies worldwide.

“The history of Africa and its diaspora are inseparable. Their futures must be equally so,” he said.

The AUC Chairperson also wished people of African descent around the world peace, dignity, justice and prosperity, reaffirming the African Union’s determination to work with them toward building a stronger, more united and cohesive global African community.
