"Medemer State" Ensures Citizens’ Welfare through Economic Growth: DPM Temesgen

Addis Ababa, August 7, 2026 (ENA) —  The "Medemer State" is committed to ensuring the sustainable welfare of citizens by implementing comprehensive strategies to accelerate economic growth, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said.

The Deputy Prime Minister made the remarks during the inauguration and commissioning of an expansion and digitalization project at the Amhara Regional Health Bureau.

He said infrastructure, healthcare, and institutional development projects being implemented across the country are registering encouraging results.

The government is prioritizing key sectors, including agriculture, tourism, digital services, and manufacturing, to accelerate economic growth and expand opportunities for citizens, DPM Temesgen said.

He explained that the wealth and economic opportunities generated through these sectors are primarily intended to strengthen social services, particularly education and healthcare.

Regarding the health sector, the Deputy Prime Minister said ongoing reforms are producing tangible results, accompanied by strengthened disease prevention and control efforts.

He noted that initiatives are also underway to increase the local production of life-saving medicines and essential medical supplies, reducing reliance on imports.

To improve maternal health and promote a healthier society, the government is providing comprehensive care for mothers from pregnancy through childbirth and the postnatal period, he said.

The government is also expanding health insurance coverage to ensure that low-income citizens are not excluded from essential medical services, an approach he described as exemplary in Africa.

Ethiopian hospitals are increasingly adopting modern technologies to improve medical services and reduce the need for citizens to travel abroad for treatment, DPM Temesgen added.

He further expressed confidence that Bahir Dar, with its natural beauty and expanding infrastructure, has the potential to become a major medical and tourism hub in Ethiopia and the wider region.

The Deputy Prime Minister called for digitalization and reform efforts to be sustained and expanded at all zonal, woreda, and kebele levels.
