Green Legacy Great Hope for Handing Over Green Ethiopia to Next Generation: Mayor Adanech

Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (ENA) —The Green Legacy Initiative is a great hope for handing over a green Ethiopia to future generations, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie said.

Mayor Adanech has taken part in today's historic 800 million tree seedlings planting campaign.

Speaking at the event this morning, the Mayor said the Green Legacy Initiative is a great hope through which a green Ethiopia will be passed to the next generation.

Today is a day to bow down and plant trees so as to build a green Ethiopia, united in thought and action to cover the country in green, she noted.

"What we are planting today is our food, shed, and beauty," the Mayor stated, adding that the initiative plays a significant role in combating the challenges posed by climate change.

The Mayor, who noted that 48 billion seedlings have been planted across the country over the past seven years, described the achievement as a great legacy of our era, accomplished through unity and cooperation.

She further said that all segments of the community in the city administration are coming together to plant saplings at designated sites, urging the public to nurture the planted seedlings.

Launched in 2019 under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy, the Green Legacy Initiative has become a flagship environmental movement focused on restoring degraded landscapes, expanding forest coverage, and strengthening Ethiopia’s response to climate change.

This year’s campaign is being carried out under the theme “Let Us Plant Hope,” reflecting the country’s vision of transforming environmental restoration into a shared national responsibility.
