Ethiopia Demonstrates Practical Commitment to Climate Action through GLI, Says PP Vice President Adem Farah

Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (ENA) —Ethiopia has demonstrated its practical commitment to addressing climate change through the Green Legacy Initiative (GLI), Head of the Democracy Building Coordination Center with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President of the Prosperity Party (PP), Adem Farah, said.

The nationwide campaign to plant 800 million tree seedlings in a single day officially commenced early this morning, with senior government officials, PP leaders, members and the public taking part in the massive environmental campaign across the country.

Speaking after participating in the tree planting program, Adem said the GLI has become a practical demonstration of Ethiopia's determination to combat climate change while restoring degraded ecosystems and improving livelihoods.

He noted that the annual tree planting campaigns carried out since the launch of the initiative have generated significant environmental, economic and social benefits.

According to him, the program has played a vital role in expanding forest cover, restoring degraded landscapes, improving biodiversity and strengthening climate resilience.

"The remarkable achievements registered under the Green Legacy Initiative have been made possible through the active participation and collective commitment of the Ethiopian people," Adem said.

He stressed that the government is committed to building on the initiative's success by applying the same spirit of collective action and determination across all sectors of the economy to accelerate national development and improve the well-being of citizens.

"We will secure Ethiopia's prosperity by planting hope every day," Adem said. "Beyond planting seedlings, we must ensure proper follow up and care so that the seedlings survive and the objectives of the initiative are fully realized."

The GLI, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, has become one of Ethiopia's flagship environmental programs aimed at combating climate change, restoring degraded land and increasing the country's forest cover.

This year's campaign is being conducted nationwide under the theme "Planting Hope."

Since its inception, Ethiopia has planted more than 48 billion tree seedlings through the initiative.

The country plans to plant an additional 8 billion seedlings during the current planting season, further strengthening its environmental restoration and climate resilience efforts.
