PM Abiy Joins Millions in Single-Day Tree-Planting Campaign

Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (ENA—Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has joined millions of Ethiopians in marking a historic chapter in the country’s environmental journey by taking part in the nationwide single-day tree-planting campaign aimed at planting 800 million across Ethiopia.

The ambitious national campaign officially began early this morning at 6:00 AM, mobilizing citizens, institutions, and communities across the country in one of the world’s largest coordinated tree-planting efforts.

The Prime Minister planted seedlings in person at the Artificial Intelligence University, symbolically contributing to the national drive and reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to building a greener and more sustainable future through collective climate action.

Launched in 2019 under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy, the Green Legacy Initiative has become a flagship environmental movement focused on restoring degraded landscapes, expanding forest coverage, and strengthening Ethiopia’s response to climate change.

This year’s campaign is being carried out under the theme “Let Us Plant Hope,” reflecting the country’s vision of transforming environmental restoration into a shared national responsibility.

Over the past seven years, Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative has achieved a historic milestone, with more than 48 billion seedlings planted nationwide.

Building on this achievement, the country has embarked on an ambitious plan to plant an additional 8 billion seedlings this year, further advancing its long-term commitment to climate resilience, ecological restoration, and sustainable development.

Through the participation of millions of citizens, Ethiopia’s single-day tree-planting campaign has become more than an environmental activity—it is a symbol of collective action, national ownership, and a growing global call for climate solutions driven by communities.
