Addis Ababa, July 30, 2026 (ENA) — A series of independent, peer-reviewed studies published in prestigious international scientific journals have empirically validated the remarkable success of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative in forest restoration, climate mitigation, and community engagement.
Initiated eight years ago by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Green Legacy Initiative has evolved from a national seedling planting campaign into a globally recognized scientific model for large-scale environmental rehabilitation.
According to five separate studies published in 2026, the movement is achieving measurable impacts in expanding forest cover, lowering local temperatures, and establishing Ethiopia as a major global carbon sink.
The research, featured in leading scientific publications including Nature (Scientific Reports), Elsevier, and Springer, utilized satellite data, field surveys, and advanced Artificial Intelligence to quantify the initiative’s transformative outcomes.
A study published in Elsevier’s journal Trees, Forests and People (Asefa et al., 2026) reveals that the survival rate of seedlings in Southern Ethiopia has reached an impressive 80 percent. This success stems from the transition to scientific forestry, where planting is synchronized with rainy seasons and supported by community training.
Lead researcher Tadesse Asefa noted that fusing indigenous knowledge with modern management has transformed planted seedlings into living natural forests, marking an extraordinary achievement for a program of this scale.
Research published in Springer’s Discover Environment (Haji et al., 2026) highlights the social drivers behind the initiative. The study found that participation in Eastern Ethiopia is driven by high climate awareness and a voluntary spirit—termed "Climate Patriotism"—rather than top-down mandates.
Lead researcher Abdurezak Haji noted that citizens understand trees as vital insurance for life, debunking assumptions that Green Legacy is merely a government-led campaign and demonstrating a resilient, bottom-up movement.
In the Buno Bedele Zone of Southwest Ethiopia, research conducted by Worku Zewdie and fellow scientists documented a remarkable surge in forest cover—from 27.64 percent to 38.24 percent—over a six-year period.
This reforestation has induced a microclimate cooling effect, lowering local land surface temperatures by up to 1.16°C. Worku Zewdie emphasized that this cooling serves as a practical local response to rising global temperatures, directly enhancing agricultural productivity and climate resilience for farmers.
A landmark study in Nature’s Scientific Reports (Shumi et al., 2026) confirmed the carbon sequestration potential of the initiative. The research revealed that Ethiopia’s indigenous tree species excel in absorbing carbon dioxide, storing nearly 500 megagrams of CO2 equivalent per hectare in select agroforestry systems.
Lead author Girma Shumi highlighted that this scientific validation paves the way for Ethiopia to enter the multi-billion-dollar global carbon market, establishing its forests as invaluable natural assets.
