Russia Welcomes Ethiopia’s Election Outcome, Highlights Public Support for Reform

Addis Ababa, June 23, 2026 (ENA)__Russia has welcomed the successful conduct of Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections, describing the outcome as a reflection of broad public support for the country’s leadership and its ongoing reform agenda.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry commended the efforts of Ethiopia’s leadership to strengthen state institutions, preserve national stability, and advance the country’s development aspirations.

Ethiopia held nationwide elections for the federal parliament and regional councils on June 1.

Official results announced by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) on June 21, indicated that the ruling Prosperity Party secured 438 seats in the House of People’s Representatives, giving it a commanding majority in the federal legislature.

The party also won an overwhelming majority of seats in regional councils.

International observer missions from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development praised the peaceful and orderly conduct of both the election campaign and voting process, noting the absence of major irregularities or serious violations.

Commenting on the results, Russia said the successful completion of the elections demonstrates the confidence of the Ethiopian people in the current leadership’s efforts to strengthen statehood, safeguard internal stability, and advance national development objectives.

The election outcome has attracted growing international attention, with observers viewing it as an important milestone in Ethiopia’s ongoing political and institutional reform process.

The results are also seen as signaling continued public support for efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and economic transformation across the country.
