IGAD Congratulates Ethiopia on the Successful Conduct of 7th General Elections
Addis Ababa, June 23, 2026 (ENA)__ The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has congratulated the Government and people of Ethiopia on the successful conduct of the country’s 7th General Elections, held on 1 June 2026.
In a statement issued by the IGAD Secretariat, the regional bloc also described the process as a reflection of Ethiopia’s commitment to democratic governance and constitutional order.
Moreover, IGAD congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Prosperity Party on securing a majority in the elections, following the official announcement of results by the National Election Board of Ethiopia on 21 June 2026.
IGAD commended the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) for its professionalism and dedication in managing the electoral process, while praising Ethiopian citizens for their peaceful participation, which contributed to the orderly and successful conduct of the polls.
The Secretariat noted that the elections underscore Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold constitutional governance.
It further expressed confidence in the country's continued pursuit of national unity, inclusive dialogue, and policies aimed at advancing peace, stability, and sustainable development.
Highlighting Ethiopia’s pivotal role in the Horn of Africa, IGAD emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation to address regional challenges and promote shared prosperity.
The regional organization also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Ethiopian government to deepen regional integration, strengthen peace and security, and advance sustainable development across the IGAD region.
The statement adds to a growing number of regional and international messages recognizing Ethiopia’s electoral process and reaffirming support for the country’s ongoing political and development trajectory.
