Ethiopia, U.S. Hold High-Level Talks to Deepen Strategic Cooperation

Addis Ababa, May 12, 2026 —Ethiopia and the United States held high-level bilateral consultations in Washington, D.C. on Monday, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening longstanding ties and expanding cooperation on key strategic priorities.

The Ethiopian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Gedeon Timothewos and comprising Macroeconomic Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ambassador Girma Birru and Director General of National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), Ambassador Redwan Hussein, held discussions with their counterparts from the United States.

The delegation met with senior officials from the United States Department of State and other U.S. counterparts.

The structured dialogue centered on three major areas of cooperation: boosting economic growth through trade and investment, enhancing defense and security collaboration, and advancing efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

Officials from both countries emphasized the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic engagement and deepening cooperation on issues of mutual interest, ENA learned.

The newly established bilateral consultation framework is expected to provide a more consistent platform for dialogue and help strengthen the long-standing partnership between Ethiopia and the United States.
