Ethiopian Charts Bold Future as It Deepens Africa’s Connectivity, Global Reach

Addis Ababa, April 13, 2026 (ENA) —Africa’s largest aviation group, Ethiopian Airlines, is doubling down on its mission to connect the continent while expanding its footprint across the globe, positioning itself as a central force in Africa’s economic integration and global engagement.

Speaking to Ethiopian News Agency, Group CEO Mesfin Tassew revealed that the airline now serves 66 destinations across Africa, with plans to further strengthen intra-African connectivity—an essential pillar for unlocking the continent’s economic potential.

But the ambition doesn’t stop at Africa.

Already flying to 145 international destinations across five continents, the airline is setting its sights on a bold milestone: 243 global destinations by 2040.

This long-term vision reflects a strategy that blends commercial growth with a broader developmental purpose.

At the heart of this expansion is a powerful idea, connectivity as a catalyst for transformation.

Mesfin emphasized that stronger air links are critical to realizing the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area, enabling smoother trade flows, boosting tourism, and fostering deeper economic cooperation across borders.

In his view, a well-connected Africa is better positioned to act collectively and compete globally.

To bring this vision to life, Ethiopian Airlines is actively building partnerships with other African carriers, aiming to create a more integrated aviation network.

Group CEO Mesfin Tassew said the airline’s partnership strategy is designed to deliver “seamless travel, lower costs, and wider access for passengers across the continent.”

Yet, the airline sees its role as going beyond profit.

Framing its growth as part of a larger mission, Mesfin linked the airline’s strategy to Agenda 2063, Africa’s blueprint for long-term socio-economic transformation. In this context, aviation becomes not just transportation, but infrastructure for unity and progress.

As the airline marks 80 years since its founding in 1946, it reflects on a journey from a modest national carrier to a global aviation powerhouse—while keeping its eyes firmly on the future.

With its 2040 vision taking shape, Ethiopian Airlines is not just expanding routes, it is helping map the future of a more connected, competitive, and integrated Africa.
