ECTA Confident in Strategy Set to Penetrate Specialty Coffee Markets in Global Market

Addis Ababa, March 5, 2026 (ENA)—The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) has expressed its confidence in Ethiopia's strategy to enhance quality and penetrate specialty coffee markets in the global market.

In a presser addressing the current state of the global coffee market, Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority Director-General, Adugna Debella, revealed that implementations aimed at improving the quality and quantity of Ethiopian coffee have resulted in significantly better revenue from the global market over the last five years.

According to him, efforts to streamline the coffee value chain, alongside increasing production and productivity, have been central to this strategy.

More than 2,000 farmers have obtained export licenses, with approximately 500 actively exporting their products, he added.

In the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year, the country has produced approximately 1.5 million metric tons of coffee, and is striving to secure around 3 billion USD by the end of the fiscal year.

Coffee exports have generated over 2.6 billion USD in the past Ethiopian fiscal year, it was learned.

The Director-General expressed confidence in Ethiopia's strategy to enhance quality and penetrate specialty coffee markets.

Adugna urged producers and suppliers to promptly market their products, emphasizing that international coffee price may decline in the foreseeable future.

He stressed that the law mandates that coffee must be exported within the same year it is produced.

Furthermore, Director-General announced on the occasion the establishment of a national anti-smuggling task force to oversee activities aimed at illicit coffee trading.
