Mexico Supports Ethiopia's National Dialogue – Ambassador

Addis Ababa, 20 February 2026 —Mexico's Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union, Alejandro Ives Estivill Castro, has voiced strong support for Ethiopia's ongoing National Dialogue and upcoming national elections, hailing them as vital phases toward democratic unity without foreign meddling.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Ambassador Castro emphasized that Ethiopia's inclusive efforts, noting the dialogues revealing in all corners of Ethiopia and with the diaspora communities all over the world.

The ambassador stated the dialogues as "a very positive thing that is going to provoke cohesion among Ethiopians in a very positive way."

Telling from Latin America's experiences, he recommended potential examples, including "truth commissions" and strategies "provoking more coordination about the stakeholders."

Mexico, he added, is following these developments "with a lot of interest" and believes they "are going to succeed at the end."

Castro underscored non-interference as an essential value.

"What for Mexico is most important is that all people, all the society of Ethiopia feels secure, feels very well received in its will," he stated.

He confirmed that "the best result of that election is going to be the one that is the best for the Ethiopian society," imitating Ethiopians' focus on "coherence among their people," unity, and coordination.

"Mexico believes that any other country from outside should not be involved or interfering at all in any kind of internal part of Ethiopian process," Castro restated. Yet, He expressed optimism as "We are very favorable about the possibility of having an incredible process."

Ethiopia's National Dialogue objects to address historical grievances and create unity following years of internal challenges.

Ambassador Castro's remarks aligned with Mexico's diplomatic stance on sovereignty, as the country shares experiences from its own democratic transitions.

"Every country is always in the process of being better in its democracy," underscoring the importance of leadership that mirrors societal interests.

For Mexico, the priority is clear, he stressed as "giving the society of each country the possibility of developing a good democracy that is strong enough for all the satisfaction of its people. I think we are going to witness that."

As dialogues continue, Mexico hopes for outcomes where "all the people that is going to be participant in this process is satisfied at the end," ensuring respect for Ethiopian communities worldwide, as the Ambassador said.
