Prime Minister Abiy Reviews Major Agricultural, Irrigation Projects in Oromia Region

Addis Ababa, February 18, 2026 (ENA)—Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has conducted an on-site review of key agricultural development initiatives in the Oromia region, underscoring the government’s intensified focus on food security, rural transformation, and infrastructure-led growth.

During his visit to Hawa Gelan Woreda in Kelem Welega Zone, the Prime Minister toured a thriving banana cluster farm established under the Bounty of the Basket (Lemat Tirufat) initiative.

The project has rapidly emerged as a model of organized, cooperative farming, demonstrating how coordinated community effort can unlock the full potential of local resources.

“Today, I visited a banana cluster farm in Hawa Gelan Woreda of Kelem Welega Zone, developed under the Bounty of the Basket initiative,” the Prime Minister shared on his social media page.

He commended farmers for working collaboratively and transforming their surroundings through commitment, discipline, and innovation.

By efficiently utilizing land and water resources and applying traditional irrigation techniques, the community has built a productive and commercially viable agricultural hub.

The Prime Minister emphasized that improved road infrastructure is playing a pivotal role in boosting productivity by enabling farmers to transport their produce to markets more efficiently.

This integration of agriculture and infrastructure, he noted, reflects a strategic approach to development that aligns closely with local needs and capacities.

In addition, Prime Minister Abiy reviewed the Qeto Irrigation Infrastructure Development Project, which is delivering tangible benefits to communities in Sedi Chanka and Hawa Gelan woredas.

The project has been carefully designed to harmonize with the area’s natural landscape, ensuring sustainable and reliable water access for farming.

Irrigated lands are already under cultivation, with farmers directly benefiting from enhanced agricultural productivity.

The accompanying road infrastructure is further improving market access and easing daily life for residents.

With the region’s strong agricultural potential—supporting crops such as wheat, rice, banana, papaya, and orange—the Qeto Irrigation Project stands as a powerful example of how integrated irrigation and infrastructure development can accelerate sustainable rural growth.

The Prime Minister’s visit highlights the government’s continued commitment to strengthening agricultural value chains, empowering farming communities, and advancing Ethiopia’s broader development agenda through practical, results-driven initiatives.
