Ethiopia Inaugurates Landmark Aysha-II Wind Power Project

Addis Ababa, January 31, 2026 (ENA) — Ethiopia reached a defining milestone in its journey toward energy sovereignty today with the official inauguration of the Aysha-II Wind Power Project in Somali Region, according to Office of the Prime Minister.

This flagship initiative represents a decisive stride in diversifying the nation’s renewable energy portfolio and fortifying its green economy.

According to the office, the project serves as a foundational pillar for a technology-driven economy. The successful completion of Aysha-II demonstrates Ethiopia’s unique capability to translate bold national aspirations into tangible reality.

Located in the Somali Region, Aysha-II is strategically positioned to harness one of East Africa’s premier wind corridors.

Inaugurating the landmark project, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed noted that the facility is central to the national energy security strategy, boasting an annual generation capacity of 467 GWh.

The project integrates advanced SCADA and SVG technologies, ensuring a stable and scalable power supply essential for modern industrial growth.

Beyond domestic utility, the project leverages a significant geographic advantage.

Its proximity to neighboring borders positions Ethiopia to become a central hub for regional energy trade, fostering deeper ties across the Horn of Africa.

Guided by the principle of Medemer, the government remains committed to transforming Ethiopia’s vast natural endowments into shared resources. This approach seeks to physically and economically bind the region together, ensuring that the nation's renewable wealth contributes to collective prosperity and stability, the prime minister.
