Ethiopia Launches National ID and Bank Account Harmonization Initiative

Addis Ababa, December 10, 2025— The Bank of Ethiopia and the Ethiopian National ID Program officially launched the integration of National ID with bank accounts today.

National Bank of Ethiopia Deputy Governor Solomon Desta highlighted the move as a crucial milestone for digital transformation in the financial sector.  

He explained that the initiative aims to promote legal transactions while curbing illegal activities and fraud, reinforcing security and legal compliance.

Ethiopian National ID Program Director General Yodahe Zemichael added that this system will link citizen data with banking platforms, enhancing the protection of personal information.  

Going forward, banks will be required to align customers’ bank accounts with their national ID Fayda number.
