Ethiopia Moving towards Inclusive Growth, Declares PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, November 22, 2025 (ENA) -- Ethiopia’s journey towards inclusive growth is unfolding, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared at the G20 Summit 2025 in South Africa.

Addressing the G20 Summit 2025 in South Africa, PM Abiy emphasized Ethiopia's ongoing journey towards inclusive growth.

"Ethiopia's journey is still unfolding," he said, sharing a narrative that mirrors the struggles and triumphs of many nations present.

The premier pointed out the concept of "Medemer", a philosophy that emphasizes unity and collaborative progress, as a guiding principle for the nation's development.

Under this ethos, Ethiopia is forging ahead, transforming cities into innovation hubs and empowering farmers with modern tools that were unimaginable a generation ago, the premier added.

Abiy further challenged the longstanding label of fragility often associated with countries like Ethiopia.

He described Ethiopia’s journey as a "quiet revolution" of proactive change, highlighting that inclusive growth is not merely an act of charity but a fundamental efficiency.

The Prime Minister pointed out that when every sector —from farmers to entrepreneurs, shares in progress, the economy thrives sustainably.

Despite facing significant challenges such as drought, conflict, and global economic shocks, Ethiopia emerges more robust, investing in renewable energy and digital infrastructure, he underscored, outlining efforts in green agriculture that empower smallholder farmers to become champions of climate resilience.

Pointing at the three core priorities for Ethiopia in the global context: debt relief, climate action, and energy transformation, the premier called on the G20 to ensure that debt relief translates into impactful investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Furthermore, he showcased Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative through which over 48 billion seedlings have been planted, stressing the need for ecological restoration as a global investment priority.

Ethiopia’s commitment to renewable energy was also highlighted with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam symbolizing the continent's aspirations towards sustainability.

Abiy also pointed out the country's vision for an interconnected African energy network that relies on diverse sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and nuclear power, while striving for net-zero emissions.

On the digital front, he announced significant advancements, including the liberalization of telecommunications and the expansion of digital finance. By 2030, Ethiopia aims to establish a national digital public infrastructure that integrates identity, payment, and data platforms to serve its citizens effectively.

He positioned artificial intelligence as a strategic tool to address local challenges such as predicting droughts and promoting health diagnostics.

Concluding his speech, Prime Minister Abiy proposed a new perspective for the G20, advocating for resilience to be measured alongside economic growth.

"Let us count not only GDP but also the capacity of societies to adapt and thrive," he urged, reiterating Ethiopia's readiness to engage in this shared global journey, rooted in the principles of Medemer.
