DPM Temesgen Affirms Ethiopia's Leading Role in Sustainable Energy, Shared Prosperity

Addis Ababa, October 27, 2025 (ENA) – Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh affirmed that Ethiopia continues to play a leading role in sustainable water and energy development while advancing shared regional prosperity.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd Ethiopian Water and Energy Week at the Science Museum, DPM Temesgen explained that the country is making a tangible difference by improving the lives of millions through renewable energy, water, and green development initiatives.

“Ethiopia remains steadfast in its commitment to harnessing its rivers for the shared prosperity of the region while securing sea access for its national interests,” he underscored, adding that the Water and Energy Week is a celebration of progress, partnership, and innovation in the county’s journey toward sustainable development

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Ethiopia is becoming the energy hub of the region and so far it is providing renewable energy to Djibouti, Sudan and Kenya.

“Through a strong focus on renewable energy and water resource development, Ethiopia has achieved remarkable milestones in expanding access to clean water and electricity for millions of its citizens,” he underscored.

As the country evolves into a regional energy hub, it continues to enable neighboring countries to benefit from affordable and sustainable renewable energy, strengthening regional ties and advancing collective prosperity, he added.

He further elaborated that the country will also export electricity to other countries, which is a demonstration of its vision for shared regional prosperity.

According to the deputy prime minister, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) stands as a beacon of Ethiopia’s vision for a brighter future, a light for Africa, a symbol of unity, and a testament to the power of cooperation among neighboring countries.

The dam will not only provide energy development but also protect biodiversity, prevent floods and provide a stable flow of water to downstream countries, he added.

Having emphasized the importance of ensuring mutual benefit and cooperation rather than competition, he explained why Ethiopia is working with a clear stance that its transboundary rivers are the foundations of regional connectivity.

Securing access to the sea guarantees the country’s future as its economy has been growing, he further emphasized, adding that it is a vital step in deepening regional economic integration and fostering shared growth across the Horn of Africa.

“Sustainable development of water and energy resources, through cooperation, innovation, and mutual trust, remains the foundation of our shared destiny,” he underlined.

According to him, gaining access to the sea will open a new chapter in strengthening trade, enhancing economic integration and enhancing regional cooperation.

Ethiopia is working to secure access to the sea in a peaceful manner for mutual development and sustainable benefits, as its destiny is intertwined with that of its neighbors, he emphasized, reaffirming that the country will continue to play its leading role in ensuring Africa’s sustainable water and energy security.
