NBE Governor Discusses Ethiopia's Accession to WTO with Asst. US Trade Representative for WTO, Multilateral Affairs

Addis Ababa, October 22, 2025 (ENA) – National Bank of Ethiopia Governor, Eyob Tekalegn, met with the Assistant United States Trade Representative for WTO and Multilateral Affairs, Neil Beck, to discuss Ethiopia’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

During the meeting, the Governor provided an update on the sixth meeting of the Working Party on Ethiopia's accession to the WTO, highlighting the key reforms implemented since then.

According to a press release sent to ENA, Eyob emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to finalizing its accession by March 2026 during the WTO's 14th Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The Governor also explained that the process is guided not only by a timeline but also by significant effort, dedication, and a leadership that recognizes the transformative potential of trade.

Eyob also discussed the status of bilateral negotiations regarding market access, the substantial support Ethiopia is receiving from member countries and international organizations, and requested robust engagement from the United States.

The Assistant United States Trade Representative for WTO and Multilateral Affairs acknowledged the extensive reforms in Ethiopia and praised the progress made toward WTO accession, encouraging the country to continue on its current path.

Beck encouraged Ethiopia to continue on its current path and he promised to engage sincerely and maintain transparency regarding the conditions Ethiopia must meet to successfully join the WTO.
