Ethiopia’s Global Peace Role Spotlighted in FM Gedion’s UNC Talks

Addis Ababa, October 17, 2025 (ENA)—Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos conferred with members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) that are in Addis Ababa for the Annual Informal Joint Seminar with the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) taking place on 13 – 17 October 2025.

The meeting involved an exchange of views on regional and global issues of peace and security, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Gedion underscored the importance Ethiopia attaches to the role of the UNSC in ensuring global peace and security.


Members of the Security Council acknowledged Ethiopia’s longstanding role for global and regional peace and security.

The meeting also saw constructive discussions on the need for enhanced international cooperation to resolve conflict situations in Africa and globally.

Permanent representatives of members of the Council briefed the Minister on the joint work with the AU Peace and Security Council.

The two sides had an insightful discussion over the need to ensure complementarity and effective coordination between the UNSC and the AUPSC.

Minister Gedion reassured the council members of Ethiopia’s continued commitment, including as a member of the AUPSC, to play a proactive role in ensuring stability in the region.

It is to be recalled that Addis Ababa hosted the only UN Security Council meeting conducted outside of the New York UN headquarters, on January 28, 1972 where the Council held its 1672nd meeting.
