NBE Governor Eyob Calls for Accelerated IMF Quota Reform

Addis Ababa, October 17, 2025 (ENA) -- The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) welcomes the 50 percent increase in IMF quotas, recognizing it as a positive step toward strengthening the global financial safety net and enhancing access to resources for member countries.
During the Africa Group III Constituency Meeting on the sidelines of the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings, Governor Eyob Tekalign Tolina (PhD) emphasized the importance of complementing this progress with a timely and equitable quota realignment that better reflects the current global economic landscape, NBE said in a press release it sent to ENA.
“While we welcome the quota increase and its swift implementation, the urgency of quota realignment cannot be overstated,” Governor Eyob stated.
“For many African economies, including Ethiopia, the IMF remains the most reliable layer of the global financial safety net. Continued delays in realignment risk leaving these economies without the support needed to navigate global uncertainties., ” it said.
He further commended the emerging consensus to protect the quota shares of developing member countries, while underscoring the need to address underrepresentation within the current framework.
“In that same spirit,” he noted, “countries that remain significantly underrepresented—such as Ethiopia—should be prioritized in future quota realignments to ensure a fair, balanced, and inclusive international financial system.”
