Meskel Demera Celebrations Underway Nationwide Among Ethiopian Christians

Addis Ababa, September 26, 2025 (ENA) -- Ethiopian Christians are joyfully celebrating the Meskel Demera festival, which marks the Finding of the True Cross, with a variety of religious and traditional events across the country.

In Addis Ababa, the celebration is being held in the presence of the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, His Holiness Abune Matias, alongside the Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie.

In addition, ministers, high-ranking government officials, ambassadors of several countries based in the capital, as well as tourists from different parts of the world, are attending the grand festival at Meskel Square.

The event is further enriched by the participation of members of the Ethiopian Orthodox clergy and Sunday school students, who are performing hymns and religious rituals to commemorate the discovery of the True Cross.

Significantly, Meskel Demera stands out as one of Ethiopia’s most colorful outdoor religious festivals.

Its global importance was noted when UNESCO recognized it as an Intangible World Heritage in 2013, underscoring both its spiritual value and cultural richness.
