GERD Hailed as Generational Victory, Monument of Africa's Renaissance
Addis Ababa, September 5, 2025 (ENA) – The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a victory that Ethiopians have achieved through unity and collaboration, Office of the National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation to the Construction of the GERD Director-General Aregawi Berhe said.
A panel discussion was held today under the theme, "United, We have Succeeded", where various papers were presented and discussed.
On the occasion, the Director-General noted that the construction of the GERD was successfully accomplished through a collective effort.
By standing together and bringing the dam to fruition, Ethiopians have re-enacted the Victory of Adwa quietly and without a fuss. The dam was completed by a diligent generation, he added.
Recalling that the dam had faced numerous challenges over the past 14 years, Aregawi said the hurdles were overcome through the concerted efforts of the public and the government.
According to him, the success will serve as a stepping stone for future victories and reiterated that the dam is a significant achievement that Ethiopians secured through unity and collaboration.
Similarly, Water and Energy Minister Advisor Motuma Mekassa said the dam is a generational victory achieved by Ethiopians.
He pointed out that the dam is a successful project where Ethiopians turned their frustration into action, demonstrating that nothing is impossible when people rise in unity.
African Leadership Excellence Academy President Zadig Abrha said that the completion of the GERD proved that a nation that once stooped its head could rise on its own.
He added that the dam is not just a story of victory, but one that has changed the negative narratives about Ethiopia and Africa.
GERD is a project that heralds a new dawn and a new era for the continent, the President stated.
He highlighted that the dam is a result of courage and determination, a monument where Ethiopians raised their voices to declare that they would not live with poverty and darkness.
The project has created a new narrative that "Ethiopians finish what they start", and is a clear indicator of Ethiopia's resurgence.
Zadig further elaborated that the dam has proven that a generation capable of achieving what was deemed impossible has emerged, showing to the world Africa’s capacity for accomplishment.
The dam is a monument of Africa's renaissance and resurgence, built with its own capacity, he concluded.
