Ethiopia’s Party Leaders Praise GERD as a Monument of Unity, National Pride

Addis Ababa, August 23, 2025 (ENA)— Political party leaders underscored that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) stands as a powerful testament to national unity, demonstrating that Ethiopians can achieve anything when they work together.
They described the GERD as a symbol of Ethiopia’s unity and a model for fulfilling a long-cherished national dream.
It is recalled that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in his address to the House of Peoples’ Representatives, announced that the dam, built with immense effort and sacrifice, would soon be inaugurated.
Speaking to ENA regarding the project’s completion, leaders of different political parties stressed that the GERD is not only a milestone development but also a manifestation of this generation’s commitment and the government’s vision.
Solomon Ayele, Chairman of the Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council, hailed the GERD as the “Second Adwa,” underscoring that it was realized through the joint effort of Ethiopians.
The dam, he noted, demonstrates how national goals can be achieved through unity, knowledge, and self-reliance, serving as a shining example of development patriotism.
Yonas Betru, Chairman of the Harari and Dire Dawa Zonal Council of the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice Party, described the GERD as a “national economic pole” built by united hands.
He emphasized that the dam represents a beacon uniting Ethiopians across generations and exemplifies for Africa the transformative power of cooperation.
For his part, Feisal Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Wolene People’s Democratic Party, said the GERD is a source of national pride, reflecting Ethiopia’s progress, unity, and positive global image.
He highlighted its importance in strengthening the economy and described it as a true embodiment of public cooperation and participation.
In March 2025, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed to the House of Peoples’ Representatives and emphasized the GERD as a symbol of African pride and resilience.
He stated that the project is a testament to Africa's ability to develop its own resources and take control of its destiny, and expressed hope that this generation will continue to build on such historic projects in the future.
Prime Minister Abiy also announced that Ethiopia will cut the ribbon on the GERD in September, making history together.
