Ukraine’s Zelensky Says He Will Meet Trump in Washington on Monday

Addis Ababa, August 16, 2025 (ENA)—President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said he would meet with Pwith his American counterpart, President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday.
Zelensky made the announcement following a call with Trump, according to The New York Times.
Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia held talks in Alaska but announced no agreement on ending the war in Ukraine.
Zelensky, who was left out of the summit, said in a statement that he and Mr. Trump would “discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war” with Russia.
Zelensky also said that he had “had a long and substantive conversation” with Trump, who discussed his meeting Putin.
In an interview with the Fox News host Sean Hannity after the summit, Trump put the onus for a cease-fire on Ukranine’s President Zelensky.
“Now it is really up to President Zelensky to get it done,” he said. “I would also say the European nations have to get involved a little bit.”
On his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin said his meeting with Trump was “long overdue” and that he “hoped the agreement that we’ve reached together will help us bring close that goal and will pave the path towards peace in Ukraine”.
“We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive that constructively and that they won’t throw a wrench in the works,” Putin said.
“They will not make any attempts to use some backroom dealings to conduct provocations to torpedo the nascent progress,” he said.
Trump and American officials divulged few details on Friday about the substance of the nearly three-hour meeting with Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.
Early on Saturday the president and his aides briefed Zelensky and European leaders about the summit in preplanned phone conversations.
The leaders of France, Germany, Britain, Italy, Finland and Poland joined the European call, along with the heads of NATO and the European Commission.
Before flying back to Washington, Mr. Trump gave vague but positive assessments that progress had been made with Mr. Putin.
