Ethiopia Uniquely Positioned to Leverage Solar Energy, Become Energy Hub: Ministry of Water &Energy

Addis Ababa, August 13, 2025 (ENA) -- Ethiopia is uniquely positioned to leverage solar energy not only to meet domestic needs but also to become energy hub, State Minister of Water and Energy Sultan Welle said.

Ethiopia and International Solar Alliance (ISA) have signed Solar Mini-Grid and Solar Park projects in Addis Ababa today.

During the occasion, State Minister of Water and Energy Sultan Welle said energy is the driver of growth for any country, emphasizing that Ethiopia has given due attention to properly exploit its energy sector.

The State Minister also underscored the significance of development partners in supporting priority areas of the country in developing and transforming solar energy.


 

For the state Minister, the agreed initiatives exemplify Ethiopia's unwavering commitment to harnessing solar power and improving rural electrification and creating opportunities for socio-economic development.

"Our collaborations with the ISA and partner organization will undoubtedly accelerate Ethiopia's energy transition, foster innovation and stimulate investments," he affirmed.

With an abundance of solar resources, Ethiopia is uniquely positioned to leverage solar energy not only to meet domestic needs but also to become an energy hub, Sultan underscored.

Furthermore, he noted that Ethiopia remains committed to creating an enabling environment for sustainable energy projects, empowering local communities, and ensuring that clean energy reaches all Ethiopians.

Director General of the International Solar Alliance Ashish Khanna, on his part, said ISA is mainly supporting Ethiopia in areas of agriculture and mini-grid in rural areas, providing capacity building training, and policy regulatory support, among others.


 

The Director General also noted that ISA is here to provide support based on the priorities of the Ethiopian government, including advancing Ethiopia's solar transformation.
