Ethiopia's Vision Is to Build Globally Competitive Construction Capacity:  DPM Temesgen

Addis Ababa, August 12, 2025 (ENA) -- Ethiopia’s vision is to build a nation with advanced construction capabilities which is globally competitive and that creates a lasting legacy of growth and prosperity for future generations, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said.

The Deputy Prime Minister launched the Construction Industry Transformation Initiative, a program slated for implementation from 2025 to 2050 today.

The initiative aims to make the sector more competitive and to implement effective projects in an integrated manner.

During the launch ceremony, Temesgen stated that the government’s transformative actions have enabled the successful completion of large-scale development projects.


 

He said the government’s approach is characterized by foresight, extensive planning, and rapid, effective execution with the full participation of the public.

As a result, the government has made it its trademark not only to put long-promised and stalled projects back to work and complete them, but also to execute them with quality," the DPM noted.

While the efforts made to benefit the public have been encouraging, Temesgen said more work remains to be done. He affirmed that the government will continue to strengthen ongoing initiatives and mega-projects.

The DPM urged construction sector stakeholders to embrace technology-assisted methods to enhance the quality and speed of construction and to create more job opportunities with heightened dedication.

He stressed that the construction industry is a sector with great potential, and the integrated cooperation must be strengthened to reap the full benefits expected from it.


 

The Deputy Prime Minister Praising Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure for its comprehensive assessment of the industry and for launching the Construction Industry Transformation Initiative, Temesgen said the initiative was developed in a meaningful way with the participation of stakeholders and by examining past practices.

According to him, the initiative that has identified the sector's overall challenges enables stakeholders to fulfill their roles and allows Ethiopian construction companies to leave their mark not just at home, but across Africa.

This will open a new chapter for Ethiopia, he noted.

The DPM explained that the initiative establishes a framework for merit-based evaluation, grading, and recognition of industry players as well as accountability.

This approach will make the sector more effective, transformative, and competitive on a continental and global scale.


 

He further stated that the government plans and will continue to announce more extensive works, programs, and mega-projects involving the construction industry.

The vision is to build Ethiopia with advanced construction capabilities that is globally competitive and creates a lasting legacy of growth and prosperity for future generations.

The Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure must work diligently to strengthen its diverse activities and make sure that the construction industry becomes a source of national pride, Temesgen said.

The DPM also stressed the need to empower professionals, modernize companies and organizations, and guide the sector through an inclusive, modern, and consistent system for the initiative to yield the expected results.

On her part,  Urban and Infrastructure Minister Chaltu Sani said the Construction Industry Transformation Initiative will modernize the sector and enhance national competitiveness.


 

She pointed out that the growth of the construction sector has been below expectations for various reasons and that the initiative will be a significant step in addressing this issue.

Chaltu explained that the goals of the initiative include facilitating human resource development in the field and managing job creation in a coordinated manner.

The Minister added that consultants and contractors would be registered and graded and that the necessary support would be provided to enable them to work not only in Ethiopia but also in neighboring countries.

She concluded by saying that the initiative will usher the construction sector into a new era.
