Ethiopia Aims for Green Prosperity by 2030

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (ENA) -- The Ministry of Planning and Development has reaffirmed the country’s ambitious goal of becoming a model for African prosperity by 2030, anchored in a green and inclusive economic transformation strategy.
The commitment was reiterated today during a validation workshop where the Policy Studies Institute (PSI), in collaboration with the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), presented key policy recommendations from their latest study, “Ethiopia's Economic Transformation Vision”.
The Ethiopia Country Economic Transformation Outlook (CETO) validation workshop aimed to assess the findings, align them with Ethiopia’s development priorities, and focus on the digital economy, pharmaceuticals, and agro-processing, which are believed to be driving transformation.
Bereket Fesehatsion, State Minister of MoPD, emphasized that these sectors have been explicitly prioritized in Ethiopia’s 10-Year Development Plan.
“The study highlights real opportunities in high-potential areas such as agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, and the digital economy,” he said.
According to the state minister, these sectors reflect our government’s strong commitment to shifting away from commodity dependence toward a more diversified, competitive, and inclusive economy.
He further stressed the importance of enhancing export competitiveness, productivity, technological upgrading, and human well-being, all of which are aligned with Ethiopia’s national policy aspirations.
Bereket also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s vision of becoming a beacon of African prosperity by 2030 through inclusive and green growth.
Achieving this, he said, will require discipline, courage, and adaptability. He also pointed to ongoing macroeconomic reforms aimed at creating a more resilient and dynamic economy.
Emphasizing the importance of evidence-based policymaking, he underscored the government's commitment to research and development, structural reforms, and policy innovation to build a sustainable and prosperous future for all Ethiopians.
PSI Director General Fikadu Tsega, on his part, said the study specifically focuses on three strategic sectors, including agro processing, pharmaceuticals, and the digital economy.
According to him, agro-processing holds the key to unlocking the country’s agricultural value chains and generating employment in both rural and urban areas, and the pharmaceutical sector is vital for building economic resilience and reducing reliance on imports, while the digital economy is reshaping how Ethiopia produces, connects, and competes.
Brenda Chongo-Chanda, Head of Economic Management and Governance at ACET, noted that Ethiopia has shown measurable progress in recent years, particularly in areas such as productivity, human well-being, and technological upgrading.
“Ethiopia stands out among African countries in technology adoption, which has significantly boosted sectors like agro-processing, digital innovation, and pharmaceuticals. Leveraging ICT has been crucial to enhancing productivity and fostering innovation, particularly within the pharmaceutical industry,” she stated.
The forum brought together senior government officials, researchers, and policy experts to chart the path forward in Ethiopia’s economic transformation journey.
