Over 103 Million Saplings Planted Thus Far As Part of Single Day Campaign

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (POA)— Government Communication Service disclosed that by 9:00 AM, over 103 tree seedlings have already been planted across Ethiopia in a single day Green Legacy Initiative campaign, setting to plant 700 million trees.

In the early hours of this morning, Ethiopia has witnessed millions nationwide turn out to break their own record by planting 700 million saplings from dawn to dusk in its Green Legacy Initiative.

The campaign, which is part of Ethiopia's broader Green Legacy Initiative (GLI), is taking place today, July 31, 2025.

In a briefing on the progress of the ongoing campaign, State Minister of Government Communication Service Tesfahun Gobezay stated that this massive nationwide effort is part of the seventh round of the GLI.

This year's campaign, launched under the theme "Renewal Through Planting," aims to plant 7.5 billion seedlings across the country during the rainy season, which typically runs from June to September.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially launched the campaign earlier this morning in Jimma City, symbolically leading the nation in this unprecedented green mobilization.

The state minister also noted that by 9:00 AM, more than 103 million seedlings had already been planted, with over 4.3 million people participating in the campaign so far.

This nationwide effort underscores Ethiopia’s continued commitment to combating land degradation, enhancing climate resilience, and promoting sustainable development through its flagship environmental initiative.
