Green Legacy Significant Chapter in Ethiopia’s Rich History: PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (ENA) -- This morning, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially launched a one-day campaign to plant 700 million saplings at the Abajfar Palace in Jimma.

Ethiopians throughout the country have been engaged in planting 700 million seedlings in just one day today.

The Prime Minister emphasized that planting 700 million saplings marks a remarkable achievement, describing it to be the largest single-day planting initiative globally.

He mentioned that approximately eight billion saplings are set to be planted as part of this year’s Green Legacy Initiative, with over eight billion saplings already prepared for this endeavor.

If the target for this year is met, the total number of saplings planted since the launch of Green Initiative will rise to 48 billion, bringing us closer to the ambitious goal of 50 billion saplings within a year.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the Green Legacy exemplifies Ethiopia's potential to accomplish remarkable feats, cultivate prosperity, strategize effectively, and realize significant goals through the unity of its citizens.

He specifically noted that the engagement of millions in implementing the initiative reflects their dedication and commitment to the nation's shared vision.

The Green Legacy initiative will stand as a monumental historical achievement, akin to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Abiy elaborated that the Green Legacy is tackling Ethiopia’s poverty challenges and is playing crucial in enhancing food security.

He urged Ethiopians to unite and take responsibility for greening their nation, cultivating food in their own gardens, and elevating their country from poverty.

The Prime Minister shared that he planted a sapling at the Jimma Abajfar Palace this morning and encouraged all citizens to engage in large-scale planting activities.
