Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative: A Sustainable Response to Global Challenges

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (ENA) -- Today, the world is experiencing the impacts of climate change like never before. From extreme heatwaves to destructive floods, the warning signs are everywhere. In the Horn of Africa, countries like Ethiopia are especially vulnerable, facing recurring droughts, flash floods, and severe land degradation.

Amid these challenges, Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative stands out as a beacon of hope. This ambitious program aims to address not only the pressing environmental issues within the nation but also to contribute to global efforts against climate change and promote sustainable development.

Launched six years ago, the initiative has resulted in the planting of over 40 billion trees nationwide. But it’s more than just a number; it’s a powerful example of what can be achieved when an entire nation unites around a shared vision for the future.

The Green Legacy aims to restore degraded lands, increase biodiversity, and reduce deforestation. It also focuses on raising public awareness, helping communities understand the crucial role trees play in conserving the environment, preserving soil, and strengthening climate resilience.

Ethiopia's bold initiative has inspired others across the continent. In 2024, for example, Kenya launched its plan to plant 15 billion trees, aiming to increase its forest cover. This growing regional momentum shows how local actions can ignite broader environmental change.

The Green Legacy is also fostering collaboration beyond Ethiopia’s borders. In line with regional and international commitments, the country has begun supplying tree seedlings to neighboring nations like Djibouti and South Sudan, helping to build a collective response to climate change across the region.

Today, Ethiopians are coming together to write a new chapter in history. United in purpose, people from every corner of the country, farmers, students, and civil servants, are joining forces to plant 700 million trees in a single day, starting from early morning today.

This powerful moment is about more than reforestation. It symbolizes national pride, resilience, and a deep commitment to a greener, more sustainable future. It is also a vital step toward ensuring long-term food security for generations to come.
