Ethiopia Shares its Agriculture Sector Successes to UNFSS+4 Participants at Melkassa Agricultural Center   

Addis Ababa, July 27, 2025 (ENA) -- Participants of the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) from across the globe are visiting the Melkassa Agricultural Research Center (MARC) in Ethiopia.

The 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake will take place from July 27–29, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, co-hosted by Ethiopia and Italy.

Participants of the summit from across the globe are arriving in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia is showcasing its remarkable achievements in its efforts to ensure food security.  

The participants have today visited the Melkassa Agricultural Research Center (MARC).  


 

The research center is playing a tantamount role in accelerating the nation’s aspiration of ensuring food security and maintaining food sovereignty.

Director General of the center, Niguse Dechassa, said Melkassa Agricultural Research Centre is one of the 22 vibrant centers of agricultural innovation under the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR).

He emphasized, “As we come together at this Center in connection with the United Nations Food Systems Summit today, we are not just recognizing the vital importance of sustainable food systems; we are also celebrating the incredible power of collaboration in reshaping agriculture for a resilient future.”


 

Ethiopia's agricultural legacy is woven into the fabric of our history, culture, and daily lives, Niguse stated, and added “here at Melkassa, our dedicated scientists, researchers, and partners are working hard to develop climate-smart technologies, boosting crop productivity, and enhancing food security in line with global efforts to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

According to the director general, Melkassa research center particularly focuses on developing climate smart technologies on tropical and sub-tropical fruit crops such as avocado, mango, banana, citrus as well as warm-season vegetable crops such as onions, tomato, as well as lowland pulse crops such as common bean, mung bean, cow pea.

Niguse added that the participants’ presence reflects a shared commitment to tackling the urgent challenges of hunger, climate change, and creating equitable food systems.
