Ethiopia, China Forge New Agricultural Tech Innovation Collaboration Pathway

Addis Ababa, July 22, 2025 (ENA)—Ethiopia and China are working to deepen their collaboration in agricultural technology innovation, paving the way for enhanced knowledge exchange and joint advancements in agriculture, food science, and nutrition research.

A  landmark workshop was held in Addis Ababa, which also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

In his  remarks, Prof. Nigussie Dechasa, Director General of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, emphasized that the two countries have been strengthening their cooperations in the sector.

He emphasized the significance of the partnership, describing it as a bold step toward revolutionizing African agriculture through innovation and technology.

“Ethiopia’s agricultural sector, deeply rooted in our civilization, is poised for transformation as we strive not only for food self-sufficiency but also to become a major exporter of key products such as wheat,” the director stated.

He also highlighted China’s consistent support for Ethiopia, particularly during times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, and expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the research alliance.

Alganesh Tolla, Director of Food Science and Nutrition Research at EIAR, outlined Ethiopia’s ambitious 10-year strategy to improve national nutrition. She noted that seven research centers across the country are currently engaged in critical areas such as food processing, safety, quality, and nutrition enhancement.

Special focus, she said, is being placed on underutilized crops, traditional beverages, food microbes, and bio-product development, with a strong emphasis on food fortification for vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children.

Professor Zhongquan Sui of Shanghai Jiao Tong University also reaffirmed the strength of the six-year collaboration with EIAR, which has led to multiple internationally recognized publications and joint book chapters in the field of food science.

She also noted that two EIAR staff members are currently pursuing PhDs at her university, further strengthening educational and research ties.

The recent China-Africa Technological Innovation Partnership Workshop in Addis Ababa marked a pivotal moment in bilateral cooperation.

The event brought together leading researchers and experts from both countries to share insights and strategies aimed at modernizing Ethiopia’s agriculture and enhancing its food and nutrition sectors.

Building on six years of partnership, the workshop explored themes such as precision farming, resilient crop development, and sustainable agricultural practices, with the broader goal of positioning Ethiopia as a regional hub for agricultural innovation and technology
