HPR Achieves Its Plan Set for 2017 Fiscal Year: Speaker Tagese

Addis Ababa, July 7, 2025 (ENA) --- The House of People's Representatives (HPR) successfully accomplished the objectives set for the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year, Speaker Tagese Chafo stated.
Speaker Tagese made these remarks during the House's third special session, which focused on the review of its annual performance report.
He underscored the successful execution of legislative duties and the sustained commitment to institutional accountability.
According to the Speaker, every proclamation enacted by the HPR received meticulous scrutiny prior to approval, ensuring effective implementation.
Speaker Tagese stated that post-approval audits are now being conducted to verify the intended enforcement of enacted laws.
He further emphasized that the House's oversight and monitoring roles were carried out in accordance with established procedures, with accountability mechanisms actively in place.
The Speaker urged members to build upon the achievements of the previous five-year term while collaboratively addressing remaining gaps.
Deputy Speaker Lomi Bedo presented the House of Peoples' Representatives annual performance report, emphasizing its close coordination with relevant institutions to fulfill its legislative mandate.
She reported notable progress in executing the four core responsibilities legally assigned to the House and noted that proposed laws underwent rigorous scrutiny by legal experts and standing committee members before being passed.
Efforts were also made to promote transparency through public forums and evidence-based deliberations, she said, adding over 50 proclamations were reviewed and passed during 43 regular and special sessions held throughout the fiscal year.
These laws, she noted, were of significant national relevance and addressed wide-ranging public interests.
In parliamentary diplomacy, the HPR actively engaged with international parliamentary bodies and visiting delegations, strengthening the country's global parliamentary relations.
The Deputy Speaker also emphasized the work of the House's 13 standing committees, which oversee and support the performance of executive bodies.
Furthermore, Members of Parliament conducted biannual constituency meetings, enabling them to gather and respond to public concerns in a structured and responsive manner.
